IMHO the usual GiG paranoid delusional conspiracy theories - the Greek Government fouled up big time by spending more then the income from taxes and other charges for government services. They borrowed heavily. THEY BORROWED MORE THAN THEY CAN PAY BACK. Result? Crash landing with Athens (where most government workers are probably based) feeling the worst of it as tthe ripples spread.

It is not like GiG claimed, that the *anks lost the profit from the interest. The haircut meant the capital- 70% went to: that is to say if the *ankers leant Greece Eu 100m they would only get Eu 30 m back - the other Eu 70m has gone intoi the deep hole that is Greek government spending. That is why some of the Cypriot *anks went into free fall and asked the Cyprus govenment for a bail out, when Cyprus itself had similar chronic state overspending... and for that she claims they desrve credit for a prize which is nothing to do with the Greek debt crises or Chris Toffee Arse bringing it to anyone' attention and he can claim no credit at all for the award despite it being made while Cyprus held the rotating EU Presidency .

Indeed in my view this whole thread shows how far GiG has lost touch with reality when it comes to the promotion of Greece in particular.

EU Commissioner resigns in snus scandal...

Massive corruption scandals at the EU are two a penny, but this one is very interesting. The EU Health Commissioner John Dalli has resigned after the snus company Swedish Match complained that an acquaintance of Dalli's—"a Maltese entrepreneur"—had been soliciting a bribe from them in return for influencing the forthcoming decision about the EU snus ban.

What a fine, deserving institution the EU is!
