From real life....SHOCK....DAMN SHAME.

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

From real life....SHOCK....DAMN SHAME.

Postby halil » Sun Sep 23, 2012 1:14 pm

I copied this from the Facebook.............

After a few weeks of contemplation, I would like to share something with you. I was in a club in London (very rare) went to have a sociable cigarette and started talking to a friendly man, who had an accent, turns out he was Australian, and was in the U.K, visiting family. We continue talking and I asked where his Olive skin originated from, he proudly stated that his family were Greek Cypriot and he was born in Australia, I beamed and said my family also originate from Cyprus, Turkish Cypriots. To my horror he turned his back to me. I was gob-smacked. I managed to get him to face me again, saying, "how can our generation still have these feelings? With respect, we need to move on, we need to teach our children and our children's children that this has to STOP." I was flabbergasted! But he did look me in the eyes. I think, I hope I got my point across. We had a great conversation before our origins were expressed. I just can't believe these feeling are still
ripe in my generation..... Damn shame!!!

Halil...It's too early to build relations - the history is too close and the past not distant enough. Look at the Jews and how they still cling to what happened to them 70 years ago. The way they bleat anyone would think nobody else was killed in WWII. It may take two generations it may take ten generations, but we'll never find that out.

Basically, it's always the aggressor who is the first to hold out the hand of friendship and wants the vanquished to accept the 'no hard feelings, mate' attitude. But it can't happen overnight. Perhaps reparations is a step forward.

An interesting story Halil, to which would say two things to your FB friend...

Firstly in defence of relations in London. There are hundreds of thousands of CYs of both persuasions in London. CYs have made friendships, some-times inter-marrying, lived in the same streets, worked in the same offices and factories for generations without any trouble or the slightest of problems... so there is a hopeful model of how CYs might live together in future in CY, here in London.

Then ask your FB friend to consider the circumstances which led the CY in the story, the CY OZ visitor to London, to live in OZ.

And your Momma country has a lot more to answer for, which is why Turkey and Turks are so hated and untrusted.

WHy are you shocked Halil?

To a Cypriot born abroad, from families originating in the north, the invasion erased their history and family roots. Obviously they hate those that perpetrated that crime agains them.

My son has not been to Cyprus. He is 25, and really there is no point in going. There is nothing of my past, or our family's history, left to show him. Famagusta is off limits. The surrounding villages that I knew well, now have changed names and obliterated features. Nothing is recognisably Cypriot in the place where I grew up, so there is nothing to show him. All our friends and family dispersed to the four corners of the world so there are is no community for him to contact.

How do you think he should feel towards TCs and Turks? His loss cannot be made good by any reconciliation fairy tales.

"the GCs would rather kill and bury us all "

Palekythro, Afania, Agios Sergios, Yialousa, and Omorfita well before that. When it comes to killing and burying you seem to know a thing or two as well. The four and half thousand Cypriots Ecevit said were killed in Attila II just slipped your mind no doubt. Or was he just boasting?
