No he wasn't. That's BS. You Brits had always supported the division solely to protect your bases. And almost 40 years later you still support a permanent partition. And you Brits still can't accept that the British Empire no longer exists. And that isa what Akrotiri and Dhekelia are just two of the many dots around the world that you Brits hold onto to support your delusion that you're still a major world power. Even with your "special friendship" with the Americans, each time they start a war you jump in. The British POV: "We're equal partners with the Americans." The rest of the world's POV: "Look at those lap dogs, Uncle Sam says jump and the Brits asks how high". If you Brits actually gave a shit about Cyprus, back in the 50's you would have given the mandate to 88% of the population to decide their future. Instead you gave your Turkish allies in Cyprus, 12% of the population, 51% control of the government (ie veto) and which they used to realise both Turkey's and Britian's aim of division. So blather away that the UK was about to risk war the the Americans in 1974 or your other bs that history is being re-written as we speak that Cyprus wasn't colonized by Greeks during antiquity.
