Agreed Bill. Very distressing, if not new or recent. Therefore if almost 38 years of the same politics has not worked to diminish let alone stop the cultural vandalism reported here, then surely it is high time to attempt a new and different approach.

It is self-evident that appealing to Turkey's better nature, for withdrawal of the Turkish army, for proper care of protected properties by the dept of antiquities in the north simply have not worked. Every day and every year that goes by with the same appeals to the deaf is another day and another year of increasingly irreversible and irremediable cultural destruction. The politics of the last 38 years (or longer, whatever) has not worked for GCs or TCs; it has only worked for those who enjoy the status quo and benefit from the impasse.

Yes CL file, but what's new and why the vid is posted is the relative sleekness of the production (for Cyprob) and the way a number of related themes (all linked to what starts as Stage 1, Ethnic Cleansing and is now (and this prob wasn't the vid producer's intention) moved on to Stage 2, Turkification) are brought together in the 8 minutes.

So the vid reminds that when we speak of Ethnic Cleansing, what's been cleansed isn't just the Christian CY tradition north of the cease-fire line but the eradication, the swamping (by Turkish/Settler) of what little remains of any kind of prospect of anything other than a Turkey writ large in the Occupied Areas.

Yes, yes, yes of course appealing to Turkey's better nature is a complete waste of time. As is appealing to Turkey's Allies.

So it is naturally more productive to expose Turkey's actions to a wider audience in the way the vid tries to do, albeit from the usual perspective of groups in the Free Areas... and to highlight the Turkification Problem and also to undermine the reasons Turkey uses to "legitimise" its occupying presence, which is something that was worked on by the CYs in the Occupied Areas last year in those marches although (and this must be said) things have gone very quiet over there so far this year.

I tried to watch the vid and got the message that it is not available. The same happened yesterday when i tried to watch again the vid you posted some time ago with Denktah admitting the provocative bombing in 1963 or so. Do you think they are monitoring this forum and are blocking the vids that are uploaded here?

As to Kimon's question... well, although the resources of the Turkish State are doubtless huge, who knows what they monitor and block... but (for instance) CF has always been freely available in the Occupied Areas as far as is known... and do they have the know-how to block you-tube outside Turkey...???

Famagusta thanks Turkish Cypriots for church clean-ups

THE FAMAGUSTA Municipality yesterday congratulated the Turkish Cypriots who cleaned up the rubbish and weeds from the courtyards of the historic churches within the walls of the old town of Famagusta.

In an announcement yesterday, the municipality noted that a clean-up of the area was carried out following a Turkish Cypriot press report by Havadis on August 7, 2012 highlighting the mess at historic churches within the coastal town’s medieval walls.

According to the report, the old churches were left at the mercy of time, overgrown with wild vegetation and rubbish, and frequented by drunks. The Church of Saint George in occupied Famagusta was even being used as a toilet, said the report.

The municipality contacted a representative of the World City Association where it learnt that the alleged culprits were Turkish migrants arriving at Famagusta port and not the Turkish Cypriots living in the area.

“The Famagusta Municipality would like to express its satisfaction with the cleaning up of the exterior areas of the churches, as well as its wish that similar acts of desecration are prevented in the future, and its willingness to contribute to the restoration of cultural and religious monuments in occupied Famagusta,” said the announcement.
