Turkish Cypriots demand sovereign equality from the Turkish government, according to the findings of the report “Cypriot Perceptions of Turkey” prepared by the Turkish Economic and Social Studies Foundation (TESEV).

Moreover, the overall perception of the Turkish state and the current government in Turkey does not seem at all bright. “All interviewees agreed that Turkey pursues its own interests,” the TESEV report reads. One respondent from the Turkish part of the island argued that “the Turkish government does not understand Turkish Cypriots and does not make any effort to do so.” In supporting remarks, a journalist from the island said that “it is not important to them [the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party)] whether there are Turkish Cypriots on the island; what is important is whether or not their policies on the island are in Turkey's interests.”

an interesting report, there are a few parts that interest me these:

The TESEV report also notes that “fears still shape the view of Turkey for Greek Cypriots.” The researchers, who reported “a great deal of reluctance among opinion-shapers to speak openly about Turkey,” remarked that for some Greek Cypriots too much liberalism in their perceptions of Turkey would lead to accusations of being a “traitor” to the Greek Cypriot side. However, with the growing economic power and development of Turkey, they do seem more eager to establish functioning relations with Turkey as a neighbor. Greek Cypriots, the report states, are “more concerned with the collapse of the economy in Greece than the role of Turkey in the future of the island.”

The consensus prevails on both sides of the island that there will be no solution to the division, and that some version of the status quo is the most likely scenario for the future.

It is pure propaganda by the Turks to let the world know how strong their economy is, how their unemployment and people of pensionable age is amongst the lowest in the European and Euro-wannabee states. Their economy was so poor - a bit like the Italian Lira was - that they had to devalue and devalue and devalue their currency and it never recovered. For example, a can of Coke in England costs around 55p - whereas in Turkey, the same can of Coke costs 20,000,000,000,000 Turk Lira! If their economy was so strong, they would have brought their currency more in-line with that of the West rather staying in-line with their Arab cousins.

The worst thing that could happen is allowing this country into the European Union. They have people drawing their pensions at the age of 35, so will be 'moved' out of the country and forced to go west to the lands of milk and honey. The unfortunate thing about so many Turks emigrating, en masse, to the west is that there is no 'Pied Piper of Hamelin' any more!

If the Turkish "Cypriots" want independence then they should try Mars... there is some unclaimed land over there. If their motherland wants to give them some of its own territory thats fine too. But Cyprus belongs to the Cypriot people not any Turks and if any Turks want to live on our island legally then they will be dependent on the native majority. If they prefer the criminal illegalities of Turkey then they should shut up and stop complaining.

Well let's face it boys and girls, yes the CYs living directly under the Occupation want independence from Turkey but all the messages so far are that they also want real independence from the Rest of CY... isn't that the very real truth...???

They are not "CYs". They are Turkish Settlers and what they want are the spoils of the illegal occupation for themselves.

Of course they are CYs reh Soto!!!... cos they pass the ultimate tests of CY-ness, they eat too much and they drink zivania don't they...???!!! ... but must agree with the last bit of your post... "they want are the spoils of the illegal occupation for themselves."
