What exactly makes his death such a "sad" event?
What was his contribution to mankind? Did he stop wars and injustices? Or reduced the daily deaths of infants in Africa due to lack of basics? How many children would have been saved with the money spent for his "expedition" to the moon?

In a nutshell, his courage and profession inspired mankind in general in many aspects. The amount of knowledge that is gathers by "space people" has had tremendous benefit to all of us here on earth, from technology to medicine. Some have even given their lives in trying. No one man can do all the things you have listed above, or even a nation for that matter!

I respect your view but don't agree with it. Mankind would be much better off if it spent to save the Globe than to conquer the moon.

According to one acount one of Niel Armstrong's principal thoughts was that he was travelling on one of the most risky journeys ever performed on a craft built by the cheapest bidder....

May he rest in peace.

Yes. RIP. But him travelling on one of the most risky journeys didn't actually improve our situation one little bit.

P.S. And he became filthy rich out of that I believe?

One can say the same about eg proffesional sport and the Olympic games - however many technological developments have occured due to the space race where quantifying the undoubted benefits of some of the spin-offs is very hard.

I think it was possible that he didn't..? some interesting reading on this subject on the net. maybe that's why he became a recluse? hmmm don't know for sure as we the public are lied to all the time.
Still it is very sad when anyone dies, but 82 is not a bad age.
We all have our place in life, on different levels. I agree that money could be better spent to serve mankind.
the thing is the world is so vast it would be impossible to meet every need, though i believe every human should at the very least have food on the table, clean water to drink and wash with. A roof over your head and clothes.
But man also dreams of great things and sometimes it has been for the good of human kind, like medicine and life saving operations...and yes sometimes man will look to the sky and wonder about the universe. I think it's the beauty of been human and what can bring out the best or worst in us. In the end we are just flesh and blood with all the things that makes us unique.
Just my thoughs...for what they are worth :)

Don't worry about Me Ed, after having half his brain removed he hasn't been the same! The piece of brain he had removed is no longer living at home with his parents and is running it's own company.

I have to agree with that! The other day the US claimed to have landed some kind of craft on the moon and a space rover was driven up and down in the vicinity for which they produced some black and white pictures with the tire marks on the ground!

Now where did I hear that EXACT SAME story before?

You’d think that after 50 years they’d go past the R/C rover and present the world with something fucking newsworthy!

I’d love to push a little red button and blow NASA to smithereens all the way to the moon! It seems like the only way they’re going to get there…

You forgot the Russians. Not only they landed on the moon, but they had time for a couple of vodkas!
