An Olympian Turkish Cypriot !!!!!!!

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

An Olympian Turkish Cypriot !!!!!!!

Postby halil » Sat Aug 11, 2012 3:15 pm

And so finally we have it. An Olympian Turkish Cypriot. Meliz Redif has gone down to history as the first Turkish Cypriot ever to achieve this honor. However this achievement was made possible only with the assistance extended by Turkey and their consent to have her in their team. Once again, Turkish Cypriots were obliged to turn to Turkey to find a way out from their predicament.

Rest assured Meliz is only the beginning. If no alternative is created more will follow in her footsteps, competing proudly under the Turkish flag and resenting all those who prevent them from doing so with their own place in the Olympics, especially the Greek Cypriot leadership.

A way needs to be found to address this situation. Sports, Olympics in particular, symbolizes all the good that humanity has to offer. Politics should never be allowed to prevent the young to attain what they can, not only for their people and country but also for humanity.

We all say our goal is to establish a federation in Cyprus. So why not focus on federation building measures! Allowing Turkish Cypriots to participate under Olympic flag could be a good start. Walking behind a “Cyprus” banner can also be realized provided neither side claims to be the authority over the other. We already have an example of this in the Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe where MPs from both sides go there integrated into Cypriot Delegation but nominating their own representatives.

Halil, are you telling me this TC does not have a Turkish Citizenship from Turkey, and if she does, then she competed as a Turk and not as a Turkish Cypriot FFS. So Turkey takes the credit because she competed under the Turkish Flag as a Turkish Citizen. There are many athletes with duel citizenships who compete under another countries flag, because they also have the citizenship of that country and the flag then compete under. As a result, Meliz Redif will always be in the Olympic records as a Turk and not as a Turkish Cypriot, specially had she won anything. The "trnc" does not get any recognition of her competing in the Olympics, but Turkey does.

Here is a famous case in point.

Zola Pieterse (born Zola Budd, 26 May 1966 in Bloemfontein, Orange Free State, South Africa), is a former Olympic track and field competitor who, in less than three years, twice broke the world record in the women's 5000 metres and twice was the women's winner at the World Cross Country Championships.[1][2] Budd's career was unusual in that she mainly trained and raced barefoot. Her achievements on the track were often overshadowed by the political controversy she aroused during her short stay in the United Kingdom.

Women's 5000 metres world record
Budd achieved fame in 1984, at the age of 17, when she broke the women's 5000 metres world record with a time of 15:01.83.[3] Since her performance took place in South Africa, then excluded from international athletics competition because of its apartheid policy, the International Amateur Athletic Federation refused to ratify Budd's time as an official world record.
In 1985 she claimed the world record officially while representing Great Britain, clocking 14:48.07.

If these GCs are citizens of Greece also, that's their choice to represent Greece and not Cyprus, so what's your point?

Could she not have represented Cyprus as a RoC citizen had she qualified, if she is in fact a TC?

She chose to represent Turkey as a Turkish Citizen and not represent Cyprus as a TC.

She had a choice and she made her choice, so what's your problem?

Who's fault is it that she choice to represent Turkey as a Turkish Citizen and not represent Cyprus as a RoC Citizen, because to be a TC, it means to be a citizen of the RoC and nothing else. Unlike Zola Budd who had no choice but to represent Britain and not South Africa at that time to take part in the Olympics in 1984, because of Apartheid policies of South Africa, just as the case is in the north now.

is it a condition of northern latrine residency to have three quarters of your brain surgically removed, do you think? i've yet to encounter one individual living there, whether cypriot, from the disgraced guarantor power of turkey, or from the disgraced guarantor power of britain, who makes the remotest bit of sense - ever!

clearly zoc and kikapu our two greek cypriot friends are more stupid than they pretend to be.what this thread is saying is that tc are not welcome to take part in cypriot cultural and sporting events. if they chose to represent cyprus be serious how welcoming would you mob and your like be. it is obviously far easier to represent turkey than it is to represent cyprus
from my point of view if i was young and good enough to feature in a sport , would i want to represent cyprus, would i f###.
