Putin to visit Cyprus !!!

Postby kimon07 » Tue Aug 07, 2012 12:20 am

At last, CY has decided to play the “Russian card”. A clear message to the EU and the Troika that CY has alternative means to handle the present crisis of its economy than destructive measures similar to the ones imposed on Greece.

Russian President Putin Set for Cyprus Visit

Mon, 06/08/2012 - 15:46 — Sarah Fenwick

Russian President Vladimir Putin is set to visit Cyprus after President Demetris Christofias' invitation was accepted, according to a government statement. The dates of the visit have not been confirmed.
In a telephone call today, the two presidents discussed the 2.5 billion euro loan Cyprus took from Russia at the end of last year and Christofias thanked him for the money. They also discussed 'the terms of further economic cooperation between the two countries,' according to the statement.
Cyprus has asked for a further five billion euro loan from the Russian Federation, which has so far not been confirmed. The state is in a very difficult situation amid an economic recession and cash flow problems at two of the island's largest banks which lost billions of euros on their exposure to the stricken Greek market. The government is currently negotiating with the EU and IMF for a bailout through the European Financial Stability Fund (EFSF) and also applied for a loan from Russia.
……………………………..
A lot has changed in the region since Medvedev's visit. Natural gas was discovered offshore by Noble Energy, which proceeded with undersea drilling in the face of Turkish threats. And Syria fell inexorably into civil war.
Russia has interests in both developments - Russian energy company Gazprom has a bid included in the government's second round of offshore rights licensing. And in Syria, Russia controls the port at Tartus, and is set on protecting its interests to the point that it has transferred warships to the region, one of them via Cyprus' Limassol Port.

Dangerous - beeing seen to dilly dally with the USSR was what contributd to events in 1974 where the Greek Junta (with the assistance of traitors to the ROC) was encouraged by the USA to remove Big Mak and the Turks then allowed/encouraged to take Cypriot territory. Will the EU/USA be happy to see developing Russian political influence in Cyprus and over its possible Hydrocarbon reserves and what will they do about it?

PS Who become el Pres if Toff were to have a sudden heart attack and die?

Cancer is more usual in such cases. Remember Tassos Papadopoulos? Archbishop of Athens Christodoulos?

Not quite the same circumstances but I admit similar. Besides, CY is a full EU member now. But if the US and the EU don't like to see Russia dominating the CY fields, all they have to do is stop shitting around and stop blackmailing and lend the RoC the money it needs. Or rather, give it the money it needs, as an advance against exploitation and drilling rights.

unfortunately the Troika has to demand a quid quo pro for support since it is politcally unacceptable for any Country to be seen to get a bail out without taking steps to correct the precived problems that which include in Cyprus reducing State expenditure and in particular the state wages bill.

The Romanian IMF member of the TROIKA has been reported saying to the Cypriot minister of labour that cutting the wages in Romania by 25% was very successful. And the Cypriot minister as been reported answering that: "Yes and that's why plenty of your compatriots had to come to Cyprus looking for jobs"

I wonder why the Russians have decided to move to TRNC in great numbers over the past couple of years - investing in homes, property and business! :D
A Russian investment bank will also be opening by the end of this month (according to a recent ad in the TRNC press)
