"White" men started walking with an awkward gate, one old "White" geezer (sorry distinguished gentleman) was occasionally tapping... whilst "Black" were busy body-popping trying to adjust to the new scenario... ok, one young "Black" boy was body popping in the street... the rest looked equally bemused... that evening I went out, knowing, that what with the statistics for "White"-"Black" relationships I was bound to bump into a "Black" man with a "White" girl... thankfully that's not my problem... first pub I went into, sure enough they were busy negotiating the final details... I walked out after they told me they had stopped serving coffee and went to the little Turkish workers cafe that masquerades as a restaurant, across the street... there was a triple... a "Black" guy, a "White" woman and a man of indistinct background... by his accent I thought he was Cypriot, but he looked a little too fair... the two men were deep in discussion, but having difficulty, whilst the "White" woman looked on nervously... I ordered my coffee and sat outside... shortly they came out too, maybe for a cigarette, some exercise, or just because it was cold... the couple sat, and the Cypriot, for indeed he was, started touching his toes... he was talking to the girl about doing his wife and doing the splits... I felt I had to intrude... is there something "odd" tonight... the "Blak" man stared at me with that look of "are you really feeling what I'm feeling"... I continued... the woman said the weather had changed... and indeed it had got cooler... I then broke with my question... why is it that you think that the statistics for "White"-"Black" relationships are so biased in favor of "Black" men, "White" women?... as a Cypriot, "he's Cypriot" they quickly pointed out their companion... I ignored it... (unfortunately I seem miles ahead of any Cypriot I know, even now my own father who taught me everything he knew... well almost everything)... "as a Cypriot", I continued, "I've never had that problem, because I was always taught to believe I wasn't "White"" ... and it's true, I've been asked out by "Black" girls several times... the first girl to say she fancied me was "Black", "Jamiacan" even... "What are you then", said the "Black" guy... "A Wog"... "Western Oriental Gentleman"... "What?"... "Western Oriental Gentleman, Wog" replied the "Black" guy... "sorry, I'd never heard that before"... so the "Black" guy left me to talk to his partner whilst he talked to the Cyp... we got chatting and he eventually went to get the car, leaving her to talk to me, she wanted to go with him, but he insisted that she stayed... after I had told her to run after her lover, who drove right passed her, I got up to leave... the Turkish waiter came out... "On the house" he said, "we saw you talking to her"... so what's my point, my point is that I prefaced my question by informing them that when I was growing up I read all the works of the "Black Panthers" that my father, being a real revolutionary, had in the attic... I knew my "Black" revolutionary history, and I stood in solidarity... that was not the point, but the beginning... do you want me to buy this multi-cultural crap... (see my earlier post)... or behave as an internationalist... but Cypriots today know nothing of this hidden history (or do they?)... it is not taught in schools, and only vaguely filters through, if you're selective enough, in hip hop and reggae... no wonder their companion was not up to speed... Cypriot education is failing its own people... if I'm not mistaken...
