London Olympics 2012: Mess or Success?

Postby kimon07 » Mon Jul 30, 2012 10:01 am

Well, folks, now that the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics is past history maybe we should follow a bit what is going on with the games and all other aspects related to them (such as traffic, accommodation etc).

What do you all think? Are things going well or not? Will the 2012 Olompics go down to history as a success, as a disaster or as simply irrelevant compared to previous Games?

Why not start with what the Germans have predicted.

‘Provocative’ German media slams London Olympics as ‘one big, soggy mess’

London: A leading German news magazine has launched a insulting attack on Britain’s preparation for the upcoming London Olympics, branding the mega event as a gargantuan soggy mess.

The article in Der Spiegel rubbishes several aspects about the Games, from the clattering Tube system that will transport most spectators to Olympic venues to pavements that are too narrow and a passport control situation at Heathrow bordering on chaotic.

"London and the Olympic Games are clearly not made for each other. Visitors will need determination and, most of all, patience to reach the venues at all. And, for the locals, it all can't end soon enough," The Daily Mail quoted, an article in Der Spiegel, as saying.

Well I guess you can't please all of the people all of the time.

I used the tube system over the weekend and it didn't seem much busier than it usually is and the added bonus is that will run until 2am during the Olympics, so no need for those busy night buses.

That said, today will be the first real test when it comes to seeing if the transportation system is up to it when spectators and commuters compete for space during the morning rush, so we shall see...

That might be because of all the empty seats.

Teachers, schoolchildren and off-duty members of the armed forces will be brought in to fill empty seats at Olympic venues in response to widespread public anger at television pictures showing hundreds of the best seats at supposedly sold-out events left unoccupied.

Well what is that all about? Hadn't they anounced that they had sold out long ago? Was it a lie?

I agree with you on this one GIG.

I'm glad that LOCOG has been burnt whoreing itself to the big corporations.

Do you think they overdid it with the hype on how much security was an issue to be addressed so extra seriously? Perhaps it highlighted the threat of terrorist attacks, not just at the Olympics but all over London (tubes, buses, etc) and people (tourists) are just playing it safe by staying away.

This should be a factor the Olympic Committee should consider before they allow the games to go to any other such countries that have high-profile territorial disputes inciting terrorist attacks (for example, Turkey).

Not 100% convinced with that argument, remember that they had trouble filling the venues in Beijing.

The real stink is all about how the tickets were sold through a ballot system and that LOCOG refuses to divulge how the tickets allocated amongst the sports fans and corporations and to which events...

Looks like the transport system passed the capacity test yesterday although the empty seat debarcle is still continuing.

It's looking very wet over London at the moment ...
