LONDON 2012-OPENING CEREMONY

Postby kimon07 » Sat Jul 28, 2012 9:55 am

Well Folks! Impressions?

Likes, no likes, approvals and disapprovals? Got any "messages" any one?

Here are my intitial impressions:

The best part was the lighting of the torch.

The main part was rather a musical-theatre/movie performance.

What I found interesting was that the opening part was largely an adoption of the concept of the Athens Olympics and some parts of it were simply copy paste of those. Let me explain:

1. The use of the center of the stadium to present the historical and social evolution of Britain.
2. The large group of drummers giving the bit though the whole of this first part.
3. The copy-paste tree raising in the air.

I also noted that three very important periods of the British history were omitted and I wonder why considering their paramount contribution to the expansion and the wealth of the Empire:

1. Colonialism. The recreation of a couple of hangings (Karaolis and Demetriou, mayme) would pass the message perfectly.
2. Piracy, alias privateering. Where were "Sir" Francis Drake, Blackbeard and the other noble cut throat lords? Shouldn't they be escorting Her Majesty next to James Bond?
3. The slave trade. I think they should have paid tribute to the memory of the poor African slaves by including a scene were 10-20 slaves in irons were being boarded on a ship to be sent to the colonies. Don't you all agree.?

Absolutely obvious by their omission. Plus their current policing of the globe by bombing any countries they wish.

- It was an exercise in selling Britain. The biggest grossing author, the biggest earning comedian (contrasting with the embarrassing show of the sick NHS) and some very Nationalistic and Christian hymns ("Jerusalem" and "Abide with Me" - like a "Women's Institute" meeting  ). Blatant commentary by the presenters on which countries had Oil during the athletes' parade.

I detect a hint of jealousy here from the Greek wannabies.

At least it hasn't been over 2000 years since the British achieved anything of note.

Hello my "white" and "not white" racist, anti-Greek, swallower of all the Brit-fed hype ...

Wake Up!

Did he really invent it all alone? Or is it that the Brits are the BEST at marketing themselves? There were at least 50 people involved. Here's one:

Michael Leonidas Dertouzos (Greek: Μιχαήλ Λεωνίδας Δερτούζος) (November 5, 1936 - August 27, 2001) was a Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Director of the M.I.T. Laboratory for Computer Science (LCS) from 1974 to 2001.
During Dertouzos's term, LCS innovated in a variety of areas, including RSA encryption, the spreadsheet, the NuBus, the X Window System, and the Internet. Dertouzos was instrumental in defining the World Wide Web Consortium and bringing it to MIT. He was a firm supporter of the GNU Project, Richard Stallman, and the FSF, and their continued presence at MIT.
In 1968, he co-founded Computek, Inc., a manufacturer of graphics and intelligent terminals with Marvin C. Lewis and Dr. Huber Graham.
Dertouzos was a graduate of Athens College and attended the University of Arkansas on a Fulbright Scholarship. He received his Ph.D. from M.I.T. in 1964 and joined the M.I.T. faculty. He was buried at the First Cemetery of Athens.

He brought it to MIT were he introduced the concept/idea/technology to the team that Berners Lee was part of.

the Greeks have produced many brilliant minds, but they leave Greece the first chance they get as the socialist state system does not support entrepreneurship, research and innovation.

Further to the above Wiki quote, from MIT:

Tim Berners-Lee said, "If it hadn't been for Michael, there would not probably have been a World Wide Web Consortium. He was a spring of enthusiasm, capability, insight, and experience which drove a half-formed idea of W3C into an international reality. Ever since, Michael's strength of leadership, clarity of thought and warmth of heart have been a constant support and nourishment and inspiration. "
