Hitler and Stalin also wanted to conquer the world ---- and Alexanders consquests may have ben great from a Greek point of view but did the peoples whose lands he invaded want to be invaded and to to have foreign rulers imposed upon them, along witha a foreign language and culture thatg they broughtr? The narrow mindness is thinking that because it is Greek its is OK to try to conquor the world. -

Don't be such a pussy. Alexander was the greatest military leader of all time, a pupil of Aristotle and a visionary. Of course he was a brutal drunken killer as well. But no-one is arguing he was an angel are they? Honestly, you need to try and understand the context of the period and stop thinking like a teenage girl in a classroom who thinks that he must have been a bad man because he did some bad things...
\

yes but exactly the same thing applies to those who set up the British Empire and other European Colonial Empites in the 16th to early 20th centuries...

So by that standard applying the thinking of the 16th century there was nothing untoward about the Ottoman conquest of Cyprus because by the lights of those days big powereful neighbors conquering their weaker neighbors was how things were done..... just as they had been since Alexandner the Great...

Yes, but not to take away their achievements they are c-listers at best.

Reminds me of the old parlour game, "name me five famous Belgians" where most people get stuck after the muscles from Brussels.

You ignoramuses! You mean there's no David Beckham there or Mr. Bean? Just because you know fuck-all it doesn't mean we should judge human achievement by your own very low standards.

You think we should measure human greatness or genius according to whether you two idiots have heard of him or her? That wouldn't leave us with much would it? The ‘GR and Mr. Ed Book of Human Achievement!’ Fuck me! The smallest book in the world!

The only ones I know from that list…

Callas, Maria - opera singer who had a Turkish boyfriend

Kolokotronis, Theodoros - Ottoman turncoat who saved Balkan gypsies

Onassis, Aristotle – half Turkish business man from Ismir

All I see is Turks!

 oh hermie... as much as i disapprove of the damaging hellenic blindspot, so prevalent amongst so many cypriots, i can't help but have affection for the accompanying naivety.
