It's a small country. So great minds might have to go elsewhere to fulfill their potential.

What was Berners-Lee's excuse? He was British and he left the UK for MIT just like the Greek inventor of the world wide web, Michael Dertouzos.

Instead of slagging off Greece+Cyprus, why don't you appreciate what they can and have produced?

At least it hasn't been over 2000 years since the British achieved anything of note.

Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the world wide web.

Hello my "white" and "not white" racist, anti-Greek, swallower of all the Brit-fed hype ...

Wake Up!

Did he really invent it all alone? Or is it that the Brits are the BEST at marketing themselves? There were at least 50 people involved. Here's one:

Michael Leonidas Dertouzos (Greek: Μιχαήλ Λεωνίδας Δερτούζος) (November 5, 1936 - August 27, 2001) was a Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Director of the M.I.T. Laboratory for Computer Science (LCS) from 1974 to 2001.
During Dertouzos's term, LCS innovated in a variety of areas, including RSA encryption, the spreadsheet, the NuBus, the X Window System, and the Internet. Dertouzos was instrumental in defining the World Wide Web Consortium and bringing it to MIT. He was a firm supporter of the GNU Project, Richard Stallman, and the FSF, and their continued presence at MIT.
In 1968, he co-founded Computek, Inc., a manufacturer of graphics and intelligent terminals with Marvin C. Lewis and Dr. Huber Graham.
Dertouzos was a graduate of Athens College and attended the University of Arkansas on a Fulbright Scholarship. He received his Ph.D. from M.I.T. in 1964 and joined the M.I.T. faculty. He was buried at the First Cemetery of Athens.

He brought it to MIT were he introduced the concept/idea/technology to the team that Berners Lee was part of.

hmmmm...the key players...
Who invented the Internet?

Question

Who invented the Internet?

Answer

A single person did not create the Internet that we know and use today. Below is a listing of several different people who've helped contribute and develop the Internet.

The idea

The initial idea is credited as being Leonard Kleinrock's after he published his first paper entitled "Information Flow in Large Communication Nets" on May 31, 1961.

In 1962 J.C.R. Licklider becomes the first Director of IPTO and gave his vision of a galactic network. In addition to the ideas from Licklider and Kleinrock, Robert Taylor helped create the idea of the network, which later became ARPANET.

Initial creation

The Internet as we know it today first started being developed in the late 1960's.

In the summer of 1968, the Network Working Group (NWG) held its first meeting chaired by Elmer Shapiro with the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) with attendees: Steve Carr, Steve Crocker, Jeff Rulifson, and Ron Stoughton. In the meeting the group discussed solving issues related to getting hosts to communicate with each other.

In December 1968, Elmer Shapiro with SRI released a report "A Study of Computer Network Design Parameters." Based on this work and earlier work done by Paul Baran, Thomas Marill and others; Lawrence Roberts and Barry Wessler helped to create the final version of the Interface Message Processor (IMP) specifications. Bolt Beranek and Newman, Inc. (BBN) was later awarded the contract to design and build the IMP sub network.

Introduction of the Internet to the general public

UCLA puts out a press release introducing the public to the Internet on July 3, 1969.

First network equipment

August 29, 1969 the first network switch and the first piece of network equipment called "IMP", which is short for (Interface Message Processor) is sent to UCLA. On September 2, 1969 the first data moves from UCLA host to the switch. In the picture to the right, is a picture of Leonard Kleinrock next to the IMP.

The first distributed message and network crash

On Friday October 29, 1969 at 10:30 p.m., the first Internet message was sent from computer science Professor Leonard KleinRock's laboratory at UCLA, after the second piece of network equipment was installed at SRI. This connection not only enabled the first transmission to be made, but is also considered to be the first Internet backbone.

The first message to be distributed was "LO", which was an attempt at "LOGIN" by Charley S. Kline to log into the SRI computer from UCLA. However, the message was unable to be completed because the SRI system crashed. Shortly after the crash, the issue was resolved and he was able to log into the computer.

E-mail is developed

Ray Tomlinson introduces network e-mail in 1972. The first messaging system to send messages across a network to other users.

TCP is developed

Vinton Cerf and Robert Kahn design TCP during 1973 and later publish it with the help of Yogen Dalal and Carl Sunshine in December of 1974 in RFC 675.

First commercial network

A commercial version of ARPANET known as Telenet is introduced in 1974 and considered by many to be the first Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Ethernet is conceived

Bob Metcalfe develops Ethernet idea in 1973.

TCP/IP is created

In 1978 TCP splits into TCP/IP driven by Danny Cohen, David Reed, and John Shoch to support real-time traffic. This allows the creation of UDP. TCP/IP is later standardized into ARPANET in 1983 and is still the primary protocol used for the Internet.

DNS is introduced

Paul Mockapetris and Jon Postel introduce DNS in 1984.

HTML

In 1990 Tim Berners-Lee develops HTML, which made a huge contribution to how we navigate and view the Internet today.

WWW

Tim Berners-Lee introduces WWW to the public on August 6, 1991.

What Tim Berners-Lee said about Michael Leonidas Dertouzos:

Michael Dertouzos

A great and lovely man passed away on 27th August.

If it hadn't been for Michael there would not probably have been a World Wide Web Consortium. When in 1993 I was looking for an environment which could nurture a new community, I was passed Michael's name, and struck a spring of enthusiasm, capability, insight, and experience which drove a crazy half-formed idea into an international reality.

Michael met me first in Switzerland, and later invited me to the LCS. He was totally enthusiastic about the idea of the Web, of the Consortium, and of making the whole thing an international collaboration. Michael had been promoting the vision of the Information Marketplace long before the Web came along. He put in a huge amount of effort to make things happen, but always did it with great warmth as well as strength.

One memorable moment of many was the time early on in W3C's history when I and the small team had a number of unsolved questions and were frankly quite adrift with the rapid growth and external changes. Michael took us in hand, and briskly facilitated one dramatic eight hour meeting after which the mission, goals and structure of the team was in place, and everything looked at once logical and possible.

Personally, I have found that Michael's strength of leadership, clarity of thought and warmth of heart have been a constant support, nourishment and inspiration during my time at LCS.

Everyone who has known him will sorely miss his presence in the world.

I think the Athens Ceremony was the best ever. It had the right mix of myth, culture and spectacle. The Chinese was too bombastic and the Atlanta ceremony was too vulgar. The less said about Sydney the better - although they did their best given they've got no culture.

As for London it was all a bit of a shambles really. The Brits are too ashamed of their imperial past to celebrate it so all they can do is provide some bits of pop culture, a bit of James Bond, Mr. Bean, some nonsense about the health service (as if no other country in Europe looks after its sick) and some multicultural guff. As if they're a bit ashamed of their real achievements.

I thought it was a sorry mess. But the Brits seemed to be really happy with it and think that it reflected 'the real Britain' of today. Maybe it does. All that was missing was lots of young people drinking and throwing up in the streets...

Fernando Alonso, just a few days ago:

I don't really understand politics but it is true that the situation is not great in Spain; but a Spanish driver in an Italian car, designed by a Greek man (Nicholas Tombazis) winning in Germany. It´s great", he said.

http://www.theapricity.com/forum/showth ... ?p=1032209

Nicholas Tombazis (born April 22, 1968 in Athens, Greece) is the chief designer at Ferrari. He was employed at Ferrari as chief aerodynamics before leaving to work at McLaren in 2003. He returned to Ferrari on March 1, 2006, to become chief designer.

I Know you will feel stupid now. But you should not. You should be proud of your descent.

(unless, of course, you are descented from those kilingirous who didn't have private toilets and bathrooms in their homes till the late '70s).

But the one you show us was more realistic. Cheating in order to win was the spirit transmitted.Right? Pity such nice GREEK music was used to pass such a message!
