Carrying 900 crewmembers, three Japanese battleships have arrived in Turkey’s southwestern port town of Marmaris for reported training purposes.

The vessels, identified as JS Kashima, JS Matsuyuki, and JS Shimayuki, docked at Marmaris Aksaz Naval Base, Turkey's state-run Anatolia News Agency reported on Thursday.

Japanese Navy Command (NJC) had ordered the ships to leave Japan on May 22.

To mark the event, Japanese Ambassador to Turkey Kiyoshi Araki and JNC chief Admiral Hidetoshi Fuchinoue met with Marmaris mayor Ali Acar.

Battleships!? Only one country in the world has battleships and that is the USA with the 16" gunned Iowa class that spend much of their time in mothballs.

I understand there is a 120 year history of good relationship between japan and the Turkish navy as the successor of the Ottoman navy with a history of visits of ships of one country to the other.

Don't think they still have it in their navy but Turkey's largest warship for many years was an antique first world war capital ship which was originaly in the WWI German navy. Like the German navy it spent most of WWI cowering tied up in port.

But it isn't classed as active, it couldn't even be moved without serious dismantling due to the masts being located in the base of the dock.

The german Moltke class Battlecruiser SMS Goeben was transfered to the Turkish navy in WWI and renamed 'Yavuz Sultan Selim' it was decommissioned in 1950 and later scrapped

commission in 1909 and decommissioned in 1950 - 49 years of service is about right for a ship like this.

Not really, the 25 year old WWI Queen Elizabeth and Royal Sovereign class were not cabable of engaging the more modern German and Japanese capital ships during WWII, the Battlecruiser Hood being a classic example
