Turkey hosting the Olympic Games should have three major side effects…

1. A 3rd world country will have thrown some $15 billion away and possibly face bankruptcy afterwards. (See Greece)

2. Turkey will warm up to the idea of letting the “TRNC” participate as a sovereign nation and will most likely face boycotts and political backlash.

3. The PKK and Syria will ensure that it’s not a very merry tournament!

Here are two “serious” (according to Turkish mentality) reasons why Constantinople must be given the 2020 Olympics:

PM links religion to bid to host Olympic Games

1. “No country with a majority of Muslim population has ever hosted the Olympics,” Erdoğan said in London after watching the Turkish women’s basketball team beating Angola 72-50 in its first Olympic match.
……………………………
2. The prime minister also noted that Istanbul’s rivals for the 2020 Olympics had already hosted the event. “This is the third time for London, Madrid was the host twice,” he said. “Tokyo has hosted three games. Istanbul has bid to host the Olympics five times but has never been handed the rights. This is not a fair approach, and I shared this situation with Rogge.”

Erdo says "Istanbul has bid to host the Olympics five times but has never been handed the rights. This is not a fair approach" Yeah and I wonder why.

Does this mean Turkey will have to recognise the ROC. They will probaby employ the same tactics that they have with the EU - "if the "trnc" can't play then we won't allow ROC into the games". I bet the IOC tells Turkey to eff off.

Jerry, I would like to agree with you on this, but I fear that they are all spineless (for some strange reason) to do such a thing. This would be the icing to see Turkey refuse the RoC entry, or indeed demand the 'trnc' takes part officially.

Did they try to stop Cyprus fom participating to the Eurovision contest? NO!
Did they try to have the illegal state participate? NO!

They are smarter than that. They use and promote the "TRNC" only to the extend that it suits TURKEY's interests. No further than that. They would not jeopardise Turkey's interests for a place which they regard only as a military base (and potential source of future income).
