Elections in Nagorno-Karabakh deteriorate Turkish-Armenian ties

19 July 2012 / TODAY’S ZAMAN, ANKARA

Armenia has lambasted an official statement from Turkey criticizing Thursday’s so-called presidential elections in Nagorno-Karabakh, a disputed territory between Azerbaijan and Armenia whose status has not been determined in terms of international law, in a move further deteriorating already soured relations between the two neighboring countries.

Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Shavarsh Kocharyan responded harshly to a statement by the Turkish Foreign Ministry on Thursday, election day in the de facto independent region which is only recognized by Armenia, saying that Turkey has no right to declare any opinion over the region, the status of which is still undetermined under the mandate of international initiatives, including the UN Security Council and the Organization of Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

“If Turkey really cares about Azerbaijan’s interests, it should teach Azerbaijan how democratic elections are held and how a democracy should be constituted in Nagorno-Karabakh,” Kocharyan stated in an official statement released on Thursday. He further deplored Turkey for its policy on the Cyprus issue, stating, “Instead of giving us lessons [on international law], Turkey should withdraw its military mission from North Cyprus under Turkish occupation.”

In an official statement on Wednesday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry maintained that such elections would be a clear violation of UN Security Council resolutions and OSCE principles, asserting that these are “just another new example of efforts to unilaterally legitimize the status quo going against international law” in the disputed region.

Do you support the Armenians in this or not?

I don't see it as being a laughing matter.

The issue is not about Armenia really, but has a lot to do with Turkey's hypocrisy, don't you think?

Surely you can see that, can't you?

And yes, it is very funny in the context of this report.

I did not quite catch that. Do you agree with what the Armenians did or not. Turkish hypocricy is not alone in the world. Every single nation on earth has them.

The issue is Turkey's hypocrisy, because they are the ones who are crying foul to the Armenians, when at the same time they are guilty of doing exactly what they are complaining about in Cyprus.

Don't you see that?

Not at all, the question is do you agree with the Armenian actions of taking that land and driving the Azeris off it?

As I said I can accept Turkish Hypocrisy because every country in the world does every single day.

Well, what can I say. You are being a bloody minded fool.

Listen my friend, I'm 5 steps ahead of you in what it is that you are trying to do. Forget it, it's not going to happen, so leave out Armenia and talk about Turkey's Hypocrisy of the last 38 years to versus something that has just happened with the Armenians.. I mean, that would be like a husband's wife who had just now started having an affair with another man and the husband is not happy at all, when the husband has been doing the same for the last 38 years. That my friend is called Hypocrisy, does it not?

Another classic double standards from Turkey!

While Syria’s Kurds have stepped up to form an autonomous region in northern Syria similar to that in northern Iraq, Ankara does not intend to cease its support for the democratic transition in Syria. This process should be a “managed and controlled orderly transition” that does not drive forward the specific demands of particular ethnic or sectarian groups, the official said.

Following a stable transition process in the conflict-hit country, “The Syrian people should decide the future of the entire country,” the source said.

Ankara objects to the possibility of any safe haven for the PKK in northern Syria similar to that which the organization enjoys in the Kandil Mountains of northern Iraq.

In northern Iraq, Kurds have carved out a semiautonomous region, and fears are on the rise in Turkey that the same could happen on the country’s doorstep in northern Syria.

It's more than just double standards, it looks like Erdo is eyeing up his next conquest under the pretext of engaging the PKK in Syria. They pinched a bit of Syria last century now they are after a bit more. I wonder how close the US will allow them to get to Israel. A Turkey/Israel border - America's worst nightmare.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan reasserted on Thursday that Turkey will take measures to prevent Syrian Kurdish groups affiliated with the terrorist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) from ruling northern Syria, a day after he announced that intervention in Syria is an “undisputed right” if terrorists within the troubled southern neighbor pose a threat to Turkey.
