Could Cyprus realisitically join NATO?..would NATO want us?

Everything related to politics in Cyprus and the rest of the world.

Shouldn't they make a referendum to ask us if we want to join Nato or not?

So you mean that since Turkey is a member of NATO, that the approval of Turkey is necessary for the accession of another country in NATO. I hope you know that for the EU is the same.

The main difference is that we don't want to join NATO while Turkey wants to join EU.

So if we assume that we wanted to join NATO and they Americans had no objections. Would Turkey dare to veto Cyprus now?

from my basic understanding of nato - there is no requirement for a uninimous decision on the admission of new members. membership applications are determined by a simple mjority decision.

Unofficially NATO membership is decided strictly by the Americans. Officially though I am not familiar with the procedures, but I am sure those are posted on their website.

So do u think piratis, americans prefer Cyprus(with her "powerfull army" as an ally instead of Turkey....
And while there are British bases and Turkish army, cyprus is providing all she can to NATO, so there is no need her to join

Also, i dont think Turkey wants to join Eu only "this government" with current conditions... I am wondering what will be the result of a Referendum with a question " Do you accept to join Eu while recognise Greek Administration as whole Cyprus, without free circulation and husbandry fons... etc"

That is a very true statement NATO membership is strictly decided by the USG. There is a US organization system at the top. It does not resemble the German or UK military organizations.
When a nation's military becomes a NATO member, your military communication equipment and ammunition tends to standardize a little. The USG wants everyone to be able to talk to everyone, securely confidentially, with the same encryption. Also, everyone needs to try and use the same ammunition to avoid supply issues.

The other countries have no say? That doesn't seem like a fair alliance to me :?
