I came across the following in Yahoo Answers which I have pasted below, plus a little comment by myself at the end...
Do Russians consider themselves 'white'?
I know that when they first starting coming to the US, they avoided the term because of the Reds and Whites in Russia. (I am Russian.)
However, those days are over with.
Yet, every young Russian I know (I mean teenagers, I suppose) does not consider themselves 'white'.
I don't consider myself white either. I consider myself ''Russian''.
My family never really talked about the negative connotations of Russians being called 'White' (Red vs White again) so I don't know where this stems from.
I wanted to know from other Russians - do you consider yourself 'white' - I mean, do you call yourself that? Or - just Russian, Ukrainian, Uzbek, Belorussian, et cetera?

Additional Details
No, no, you misunderstand me.
I don't mean like skin color - it's evident that most of us are paleskinned, yes, but I mean - do they REFER to themselves as white?
Would most Russians say 'I am white' or 'I am Russian' to a question like 'what are you?' (if the person couldn't see you)
Does that make more sense?

My family told me that Russians didn't really give a damn about skin color. You weren't black, you were African.
Not yellow, but Chinese.
Not brown, but Bengali.
They didn't really use skin color as a way to describe race.
What I really want is a Russian to tell me that I'm not strange in not referring to myself as white, because of my culture. (:

... does everyone here only read the question and not the details?

Russians are proud to be Russian. Not some nondescript generalization that has nothing to do with background, culture, or upbringing.

Thank you for actually understanding my question.
It makes me feel better. I understand myself more now.
I have always been fiercely proud of my background, culture and upbringing, as you have said, and I suppose that not calling myself white stems from this.
I am not a color!
Thanks again!

good question and yes i know about that civil war between the reds and the whites . what i was actually hoping was a union of of propaganda republics could be acknowledged in russia to help counteract propaganda by acknowleding it . you know because of the non existant atrocities atrributed to russians in nonexistant wars. it would be the duties of citizens of propagandia to create absurd lies about each other and confirm the lies as not true . i would like the u.s. administration to join the propaganda union and powell in particular because named after powell river thoygh said to be in u.s. depart ment of defence.

Russians are related to Poles and Czechs, Slavic peoples who are related to Germanics and Celts, who are the epitomes of "whiteness" so I would say Russians are White but only to a degree. Many Russians are actually mixed with Turkic, Uralic and Siberian tribes and these are not technically white.

The first thing to notice is the writers trepidation in defending his true identity against the onslaught of the "White" world... the second to notice is that the "White" majority insist that he is "White" despite him personally choosing an answer that confirms his own feelings that he is not...
