Cyprus post charges 17% tax on goods + freight! :?

I just paid 17% tax at the PO for some parts that came from Israel and to my surprise they taxed the air freight aswell!

When I pointed out on the receipt the portion for the air freight the clerk claimed that its standard PO practice to tax the whole lot!

It sounds crazy but I haven’t looked into the legislation yet to check if there’s a difference between standard practice and legal practice at the Cyprus PO!

I'll keep you posted! <-- Tax free! :)

I don’t appreciate getting cheated so if what they’ve done is illegal I’m not the kind that shies away from suing for hefty sums!

Btw, B25... in my world there’s no such thing as "Greek coffee" but I clearly remember TURKISH COFEE if you were referring to the one in those little cups! Cypriot coffee is acceptable too but “Greek”? Never heard of it!

VAT is added on most products and most SERVICES. Shipping is a service and VAT applies to it. GR, my suggestion for how you use the forum is to read more and write less ;)

Sotos wrote:You pay nothing when from another EU country. From non EU countries you will pay at least VAT on the total cost (including the shipping) and maybe some import tax depending on the item.

This is not something done just in Cyprus:

Why should I and not the shipper pay Duty and VAT charges?
The person receiving a shipment is obliged to pay Duty and VAT except where the person sending the shipment has agreed to accept these charges. Private individuals intending to buy goods on the Internet from non-EU countries should be particularly careful. The price advertised on the supplier's website will not include UK Duty and VAT and you will be expected to pay this once the shipment arrives in the UK.
If you have agreed with the shipper that he will be paying the charges, then the shipper should indicate this on the Invoice or AWB. Otherwise Duty and VAT is charged to a receiver.

That coffee is mostly known as Turkish coffee. But just like some in Cyprus we call it "Cyprus Coffee" some in Greece they call it "Greek Coffee". Searching Google for "Cyprus Coffee" returns 17,000 results, searching for "Greek Coffee" returns 253.000 results. Just because you haven't heard of something it doesn't mean it doesn't exist ;) Most people never heard of "Cyprus Coffee" ... most people never heard of Cyprus!

Believe it or not it's part of EU legislation.

What is messed up is not the part that you get taxed for shipping/postage.

It's when the invoice doesn't list the shipping charge, in which case they have a stupidly high default rate that they use depending on the weight of the parcel.

THAT burns!

Oh and... free of charge shipping does not apply!

Internet search results are browser, search engine, and Windows config specific!

I've never come across anyone who has never heard of Cyprus but Greece hardly ever makes the international news so they're easy to miss! The bankruptcy has done much to put Greece on the map!
