Schulz Criticises Turkey Over Cyprus EU Presidency

Postby bill cobbett » Thu Jul 05, 2012 4:45 pm

The President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, has criticised Turkey on its stance on the Cyprus Presidency of the EU Council saying that if Turkey wants to join the Union it must abide by the rules and that Turkey's position has "cast a shadow" over its Accession.

First paras from the Fam Gazette...

It is not the European Union who wants to join Turkey, it is the other way around and Ankara has to abide by the EU rules, President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz stressed on Wednesday, speaking during a joint press conference with President of the Republic Demetris Christofias in Strasbourg.

Invited to comment on the fact that Ankara does not recognize the Cyprus’ EU Presidency, Schulz noted that Turkey must respect that the EU has rules and one of these rules is the rotating Presidency. He said that Cyprus takes on the right and the responsibility to lead the EU and that is its duty.

He noted that if a country wants to join, it must respect the rules, adding that the fact that Ankara does not want to respect these rules, has cast a heavy shadow on its application process.

Tough words, but suspending Turkey's EU grants during the RoC presidency might just focus the Turkish leaderships minds.

Maybe time is right for some tough actions as well imposed by the EU? Aiming to force Turkey to abide? We are sick and tired of "strong" or "soft" criticism.

I sorta agree with your comments, however, I think the right thing is to continue with the grants but make it very clear to Turkey that is Turkey is not going to recognise and engage Cyprus in an appropriate manner the membership talks will be called off and the funding withdrawn. Because this is going to be an ongoing issue every time Cyprus has the presidency which comes around every so often.

Unfortunately Kimon, we don't have leaders with the necessary balls to make any such demands. Distixos.

Worse of all, they don't even take advantage of the existing resolutions. Who ever heard of the victim of armed robbery to be negotiating with the convicted robber/murderer the return of the stolen goods? And the court, which imposed the conviction, (UN) to be forcing the victim to enter to such "negotiations" with the convicted robber/murderer?

Exactly, my point. The UN/EU are just plain shit and just pay lip service to Turkey.
