Do Turkish Cypriots want a United Cyprus?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Piratis
Once you said that you would prefer if Cyprus was still a British colony, how nice is the UK etc.

I personally take nothing away from the young kids who gave away their lives during the EOKA struggle of 1950-1955.Those who died rest in peace for having done what they firmly beleived was their duty. However, one must also see the facts and acknowledge that our leaders of the time, many of whom are the leaders of today, having little or no political depth, led the island into the mess we are in today.I dont doubt that countries such as the UK are also responsible, but each country operates according to their interests.Blaming them alone whilst pretending we are angels is naive to say the least.I ask you to consider just this. For thousands of years Cyprus was ruled by foreign empires non of which managed to divide the country or expell its population. It took only 14 years of independence and self rule, plagued with nationalism and self interest to do just that.An independent observer may easily say we were not ready for self government....

Once I said - and still say it - that instead of the mess we find ourselves in today, I would a hundred times prefer to still be a British colony.

Obviously, Piratis prefers the occupation and this explains nicely why he voted no and allowed Turkey to stay for ever and ever in Cyprus. This also gives him the chance to remain a true patriot who constantly fights for the withdrawl of the Turkish troops. What kind of patriot would Piratis be without the Turkish troops?

It is true we were not ready for self-government,Alexios,because we were not allowed to be ready. In fact we were set up to blow each other away,by our colonial masters.I will never forgive the British government of the time for paying TC militias to do their fighting for them. They must've known what the results of that would be once they pissed off.
But this of course does not excuse our stupid ambitions of Enosis and Taksim.I am still puzzled as to how a brilliant stateman like Makarios got sucked into supporting Enosis. Why would you want to give up your chance to be a proud and independent nation to be part of a foreign country?Nationalism alone does not explain it IMO.

BTW,Alexios,I am giving that idea of a Truly Bicommunal Newspaper a lot of thought.Nothing is impossible if we put together our great Cypriot traits of inventiveness, stubornness and passionate commitment. :D

Do you mean Nationalism or Patriotism,Bananiot?
I think you can love your country without being a nationalist.
Makarios,at the beginning anyway, was not a patriot, was he?Can you love your county if you want to give it away?

Patriotism, birkibrisli, patriotism. The patron of the saying is the great Samuel Johnson. Scoundrels resort to patriotism when they run out of arguments and of course, who can talk back to patriotic jargon without risking of being branded a traitor. In Cyprus we have many traitors ....
