Greek FM tells Turkey to stuff it

Dimitris Avramopoulos says Ankara must cool its ‘threats and aggressive attitude’ toward Cyprus

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) — Greece’s new foreign minister says Turkey must stop its “threats and aggressive attitude” toward Cyprus and to help the island nation reunify.

Dimitris Avramopoulos spoke in Nicosia after talks with his Cypriot counterpart, Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis, on Sunday, the day Cyprus assumed the EU’s six-month rotating presidency.

Cyprus was split into an internationally recognized Greek-speaking south and a breakaway Turkish-speaking north in 1974, when Turkey invaded after a coup by supporters of union with Greece. Turkey doesn’t recognize Cyprus as a sovereign country, and peace talks between the rival communities have ground to a halt.

Avramopoulos said Turkey should realize that the Cyprus’ EU membership and the discovery of natural gas off its southern coast could be opportunities to help the reunification efforts.

Lets wait and see if what he is saying while in in Cyprus will be met by his actions and stance in the international fora. I have no doubt that he and his government will help wholeheartedly the CY presidency. But that will not be enough. Greece's support must extend to other fields as well and their over all stance towards Turkey must change dramatically. It is unthinkable for them to continue tolerating in silence the worsening turkish aggressiveness and audacity.

It's fine for everyone to line up and tell Turkey to "Stuff it" (after all Israel already told them) - but only Syria actually stuffed them.

We'll just carry on like thoughtful gentlemen ...

...it is also unthinkable for Greece to merely react with the same hostility, just to up the ante.

...suffering Peace reflects a Greek value, which the whole world shares, for Charity; rather than Ignorance.

lucky Turkey and Greece don't have A-Bombs, they'd be threatening to turn each other into glass...

...while Greece is no better, (and so too the rest of Mankind actually), it is Turkey that has much to learn.
