Commissioner Fule Visiting Cyprus

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Commissioner Fule Visiting Cyprus

Postby bill cobbett » Tue Jun 19, 2012 1:59 pm

Question...

The EC Enlargement Commissioner Stephan Fule is visiting CY, during which visit he'll meet with the usual suspects in the Occupied Areas.

Mr Fule, as all will know, is charged with getting Turkey in to the EU and he's the chap who signs all those cheques for billions of Euros drawn from the accounts of hard-pressed European Tax-Payers and made out to Turkey by way of Convergence Funding.

Now, why oh why is the EC Enlargement Commissioner Stephan Fule visiting CY...? What is he up to...? ... 8)

Err yes, very nice first class hotels, fine wining and dining etc etc but...

Fule is up to something...

He is very keen to remove the road-block that is CY from the Turkish Accession process by opening Chapters during the CY term Presidency.

Wonder what is he sounding out? To offer the Republic something in return to agree to opening a few Chapters... ?

Oh... this is a nice picky...

Erdogan already said they will not attend any meetings where RoC is in the chair.

What is there to talk about?

Whatever it is - it will be something positive for the EU Presidency of Cyprus and bad news for the occupation regime!

(Something like, "well, even the Arabs do not support the Turks!" :D )

...is it the scandalous behaviour of Eroglu's administration toward the help the EU has to offer, for something as basic as water?

...is it Eroglu's open hostility toward his French partners as well as the others who are against rewarding an illegal invasion.

...Mr. Fule may still have hopes that Goodwill will inspire, however whatever message he has it is a Message for Erdogan, i suspect.

EU Commissioner Fule concerned over the stalemate in the talks

Commissioner Fule said he had very open, frank and fruitful discussion with President Christofias, the Foreign Minister and the leader of DYSI.
FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE • Wed, Jun 20, 2012
EU Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood policy Stefan Fule expressed concern over the stalemate in the talks between the President of Cyprus Demetris Christofias and Turkishcypriot leader Dervis Eroglu, aiming to reach a solution of the Cyprus problem.

Stefan Fule, who is paying a two day visit to Cyprus, held on Tuesday separate meetings with President Christofias, Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou Markoullis and Democratic Rally (DYSI) President Nikos Anastasiades.

In statements to the press, late afternoon, European Commissioner said that during the meetings he expressed concern about the stalemate of the talks, stressing at the same time that it is important for the united Europe to have a united Cyprus.

He said time is running out and that the price of not achieving a solution is going to be bigger than the price of any reasonable compromise the parties should achieve.

Fule expressed the hope that the talks and the dialogue will continue in a certain format during the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, and, as he said, he made absolutely clear that himself does not see any contradiction between assuming the role of the Presidency on one side, and continuing this important issue of the comprehensive settlement, on the other.

Replying to a question, the European Commissioner said that his message to the Cypriots is that “Cyprus is too small to be divided” and that “there is no plan B which could work to the benefit of all the Cypriots. There is only one way forward and is to reach a comprehensive settlement and make sure that all the Cypriots benefit from the EU membership” Fule pointed out.

Commissioner Fule said he had very open, frank and fruitful discussion with President Christofias, the Foreign Minister and the leader of DYSI.

We talked about the Presidency, the priorities and particularly the area I am covering in the College, enlargement and neighborhood, he added.

“It was also an opportunity for me to express full satisfaction over the preparatory process and the level of preparedness for my Cypriot colleagues to assume this important responsibility” Fule noted.

He went on to say that they talked about the foreseen challenges and unforeseen challenges of the next six months and called on everybody to respect the role of the Presidency which is an important institution in the EU, as he said.

The European Commissioner said he is very much looking forward for the Cyprus Presidency, adding that “there is a lot on the plate in the enlargement and neighborhood area”.

As he noted, the enlargement process will go on despite the number of the challenges Europe is facing domestically, as far as the financial crisis is concerned, whereas regarding the neighborhood police the discussion focused on the southern dimension. Cyprus has, according to Fule, “a lot to offer to the member states, based on its proximate exposure to the south but also its experience and dealing with this neighborhood, particularly at this point of the time when we see the historical changes in the region”.

Regarding the recent discovery of hydrocarbon reserves in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone, Fule said the discussion was very interesting, noting at the same time that these resources “should be a blessing for the region, and not a curse. It should be a catalyst for the comprehensive settlement, for the benefits of all the Cypriots”.

Fule referred to the visit he is paying tomorrow to the Turkish occupied areas of Cyprus, to meet the political leadership of the Turkish Cypriots.

Tonight the European Commissioner has invited for dinner both the political leaders of the Republic of Cyprus and of the Turkish Cypriots, for discussions about the settlement and also about the Presidency and “what is there for Cyprus in the next couple of months”.

Interesting yet no solution or support offered by the EU in resolving this matter
