Eight Years in a Turkish Jail for Waving a Banner

Postby bill cobbett » Sat Jun 09, 2012 2:03 am

CNA picks up on this from the Hurriyet paper.

Two students have been sentenced to eight years in jail for carrying a banner demanding free education by unfurling a poster which said...

“We want free education, we will get it,” during a meeting which Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan attended, which was enough to have them charged with the usual Turkish catch-all, Membership of a Terrorist Organisation.

... with one-and-a half years spent awaiting trial.

I cannot believe that EU politicians have not been able to see that Turkey is by far a very backward punitive and provocative Country and as such have not pulled the plug on any attempts to join the Union of European nations.

Isn't one of the European freedoms to do with Freedom of Speech?

Right to innocence until proven guilty?

...interesting.

in Quebec, students have held a strike for over three months, even paralysing Montreal.

many have been arrested for acts which are related to violence, and despite legislation banning their protests, it continues.

...pity, this little bit of news did not reach the press here in Canada, it is in stark contrast to the freedom people enjoy here; how unfortunate for the youth in Turkey, they have no means to express themselves, or to practice the thinking which will prepare them in the future to lead their country.

...pity this news does not reach the Turkish students either.
