ON THE eve of tomorrow’s annular solar eclipse, private institute Fakas Ltd have announced that they will be opening their doors to the public so they can enjoy the astronomical phenomenon.
The eclipse will be visible to everyone in Europe, Asia and Africa. In Cyprus the eclipse will be annular, meaning the Moon is too far to cover the Sun completely leaving a ring visible.
The phenomenon will start at 11.31am and end at 14.20pm. At its peak the moon will cover the sun by 50 per cent.
Speaking to the Sunday Mail yesterday, head of the Fakas Institute, Ioannis Fakas said the atmosphere will change slightly during the eclipse and there will be a minor drop in temperature.
But the changes won’t be as radical as the forthcoming March 29 eclipse, says Fakas.
“On Monday the sun will only be covered by 50 per cent. On March 29 there will be a total eclipse in which the sun will be covered by 98 per cent. The sky will become dark and starry and it will last four minutes. In the 50 years I’ve been studying the sky, I haven’t seen such a total eclipse.”
On the occasion of the annular eclipse, Fakas Institute will set their astronomical telescopes in operation and project the eclipse on white cardboard for the protection of people’s eyes.
Fans of the sky will be welcomed at the institute’s main building on 78 Larnaca Avenue, Pallouriotissa in Nicosia from 11.30am onwards.
The public can also observe the phenomenon with special goggles (solar viewer) that are being sold at the following shops:
