Turkish Unis to accept 'A' level TC students in the south

Postby crumpy » Fri Jun 08, 2012 11:00 am

This time last year, Turkey's Yüksek Öğrenim Kurulu (YÖK), representing Turkish universities, agreed to accept TC students (and mainland students studying in the north) to 89 of its universities according to the students' 'A' results. However, it was widely thought that TC students studying 'A' levels southside would not be considered for places in the Turkish universities, a move many thought was to deter parents from sending their children south for an education.

However, yesterday, the north-side "Minister of Education", Kemal Dürüst, told reporters they had never said there had been an arrangement to forbid southside-studying students from applying to Turkish universities. He added that competition brings with it quality, and that quality is the aim for private and state schools alike.

Interesting crumpy. The Cyprus University will not accept a GC student with GCE's even if he/she has 4 straight A'. Of course they can go to Oxford or Cambridge but the Cyprus University is out of bounds for them.

"The Cyprus University will not accept a GC student with GCE's even if he/she has 4 straight As". Clearly then, those in the north and Ankara, making the decisions about further education, are more willing to accept alternatives to their own established university admission procedures.

Clearly those in the north are much wiser on this than those in the south. This probably explains the divide.

"Clearly those in the north are much wiser on this than those in the south" - Bananiot, bearing in mind some of the responses on this forum, I would feel uncomfortable making such a comment ... but yes.

(Bananiot, I bowed out to make room for the bigots to respond first.)

Basically each mature country should set its own criteria for Uni entry. Anyway, pretty soon, even UK Universities will be ignoring the GCSE and 'A' level qualifications as indicators of ability, for something less dumbed down:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/education/ed ... fqual.html

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/05/02 ... ms_ofqual/

From the UCAS site:

"Some universities and colleges require you to pass an admissions test as well as standard qualifications if you are applying for courses in certain subjects. The details for some of these tests are provided below. Click on the test name below to find out which universities and colleges are using the test."

Turkey? Your point being?

Well this is the Admissions Guide for the Uni of CY... http://www.ucy.ac.cy/goto/acafsw/en-US/ ... ffice.aspx

From which a couple of things stand out. We can see that the Uni does accept GCE results at both O and A Level . The Uni's fees look very reasonable and the Republic pays the fees for successful CY applicants from other EU member states, which is very nice.
