Is UK a nation?

Postby Sotos » Fri Jun 01, 2012 1:31 pm

Why isn't there one UK or British national team and instead there are separate teams for England, Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland? Is UK one nation? Or is it different nations that are united in one Kingdom? And did the people of England, Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland vote in a referendum to unite under one Kingdom... or the English forced it on the rest?

In 1603 King James VI of Scotland became King of England and in 1707 under his great grand-daughter Queen Ann, who was seperately the queen of Both Scotland and England the seperate Scottish and English Parliaments each voted an Act of Union.

The UK is otherwise the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, so it is one political entity.

It is a recent political construct enforced by the most prolific invaders, the Germanic Anglo Saxons, who conquered the people previously being ruled by the Norman French who themselves took over ruling the land mapped and named, Prettania, by Pytheas the Greek - whose navigational charts paved the way for the Romans to invade and civilize (using their Greek-taught skills) the ad hoc mixture of Picts, Celts and Druids who had much earlier descended from Europe, having been taught how to farm and explore by the autochthonous peoples of the Greek world. :D

So is UK a nation? If yes then how come there are English, Scottish etc national teams instead of UK national teams?

Re Soto, isn't it clear? Four nations under one kingdom. When i wales some years ago I saw everything was written in both Welsh (first) and English (second). Even the university brochures and information. Welsh, first, English next to it. Same on TV. News in Welsh and so on.
I think the Scots are to have a referendum soon on whether to become independent?

So it is 4 different nations with their own languages, national teams and national flags... but still are united in one kingdom/country.

I think the Scots are to have a referendum soon on whether to become independent?

So if in this referendum 82% of the Scots vote for Scotland to be part of the United Kingdom and 18% vote not to be part then I guess Scotland will have to stop being part of the United Kingdom... right? And what about Wales and N. Ireland? Do the 100% of the people there want to be part of United Kingdom?

Soto, fyi, when they had the referendum to devolve the welsh government from london, it was passed on 51%! infact in voter terms was a couple of hundred votes (if I am not mistaken). Never mind 18% against. In wales it was 49% against and they still lost. Work that one out.
And here we have less than 18% of the population dictating to 82%. Shish!

What would the Falklanders vote if they had a referendum?

1. To keep being part of England or
2. To become independent or
3. Enosis with Argentina?

Oh and another question: According to Turkey, the sea basin around Cyprus is part of the continental shelf of Turkey.
Is the sea around the Falklands part of the continental shelf of Argentina (provided the depth is 200 m or less)? Or: Do the Falklands have their own continental shelf? Does Britain agree with Turkey that since they are not an island state but simply inhabited islands, belonging to Britain, they don't have a continental shelf of their own but they sit on the shelf of the mainland?
