Well..I better re-phrase.....

"When Cyprus gets speed camera's, then we will feel more european!"

You better cancell your subscription to "behind the times" my friend :D
Speed camera are being installed at the end of the month. They will be installed in 5 phases, the first of which is due to start in November. I don't know about other areas but in Larnaka the lights by Cineplex will have 4 cameras, 2 fake and 2 real. I pass by there every day and I saw contruction crews digging ditches and passing firber-optic cables and electricity a few weeks ago. All they have to do now is unpack the cameras, connect them and hit the "ON" switch.

Crap.....

I got to come out on top somehow....so let me re-phrase (again)

"When Cyprus has a reliable and modern public transport system, then we will feel more European!"

4 cameras, 2 fake and 2 real

I think they are wasting their time with the fake ones. We live in Cyprus. In one month everybody will know which are the fake ones :!: :D

True, but i think this time they are going to be professional about it. I heard that most cameras on the island are going to be fake but they will rotate with real ones on a very regular basis... There will be no way of telling which are real and which are fake and even if a friend tells you which ones are real or fake you won't be able to tell if they suddenly switched the fake one with a real one, so beware :P

The way it works is simple. In Lausanne, for example, they have installed about 50 permanent housings at traffic lights. The windows for the camera and flash are half-silvered mirrors, so you cannot see whether there is a camera inside or not. They have about 10 cameras which they swap around every day or two. No one can ever tell whether a housing is loaded or not until it is too late. Similarly for the speed cameras. I assume it will be similar here.

Part of the road from the Cineplex crossroads you mention to the Kalo Chorio roundabout has recently had its speed limit raised from 50 km/h (abusive, as there are no buildings in sight) to 65 km/h (still abusive, as it's 4 lane dual carriageway). I bet this will now be even more closely monitored.

Why they just don't put real cameras everywhere? Are they that expensive not even the government can afford to buy some more?

The government bought 237 cameras, I guess including the fake ones.
They will be installed in five stages.
The cost of cameras is 6.5 million euros.
I guess not only the cost of cameras is important but also the installation cost and maintenance and all this wiring work.
Maybe, the government will buy more cameras if they prove to be successful

By succesfsful i take it you mean if they make mega bucks out of honest hard working people.

Well the answer to that one is , there'll be successfull ok, the government wont be able to buy them fast enough. Just look at whats happening in the UK hundreds more cameras cos the cops are getting their overtime, holidays and verything else paid for out of it. Its a scam. They pretend its for safety reasons but bloody nora as they say when a single camera is racking in 3.5 millions pounds / year thats making money.

sadly pantheman

8) :(

I disagree mate... I think cameras are a great idea.

Cypriots are undoubtedly, undisputedly, incomprehensibly the WORST drivers I have EVER enountered (and in theis comparison I do include Asian, Indian and Lebanese drivers).

Sure, I agree revenue will be raised, and it is a aweful waste of money - if you are caught, but the solution is simple; DONT SPEED & DONT RUN RED LIGHTS. Follow these 2 simple rules and you will be fine!
