We own a furniture store in Larnaca. It's a family business with around 6 employees and believe it or not, we welcome Ikea to Cyprus. Furniture is not like groceries in supermarkets. With furniture you have thousands of different tastes to satisfy and you would never catch Ikea selling heavy solid-oak rustic tables, or antiques or many other types of furniture. Ikea cannot compete with us. The only businesses who will loose are those who sell cheap wooden or plastic furniture. Also the likes of Pissarides will be hit.

As far as Ikea goes, the plan is to open it at the ITL, which is shacolas answer to Orphanides shopping center in Nicosia. It's going to be HUGE and will house Chacolas most prominent companies which include Ikea, Next, Zara, Superhomecenter, debenhams and Larnaka International Airport (LOL... only kidding about the airport, that's staying in larnaka)

An Ikea opened in Edmonton? Have I been away from North London that long?

When did it open up?

Andy, any ideas when Ikea is opening up?

Is Ikea opening here the answer to the 'Cyprus Problem' :?:

Ikea have their own company flag, when raised over Cyprus the Ikea flag unites bargain hunters/home improvers from every corner of Cyprus in an orgy of spending money they may or may not have

The blue and yellow uniformed Ikea eighteen month service conscripts take over the Green Line and the crossing points, no passports or ID's required just plenty of credit on the plastic and an Ikea catalogue. To ensure peace in our time and prevent long lines of disgruntled customers the UN will take over the 'returns' department and adjudicate on the damaged and missing flat pack parts

What you said actually makes sense! Turkish Cypriots are quite a traveling bunch of people and have close relations to the UK much like the Greek Cypriots. T/C's will appreciate the opening of Ikea as much as Greek Cypriots will. Just another small way in bringing the two communities together.

NOPE!!!

Ikea rocks!! I can easily spend half a day there just walking around thinking where I could put this and that in my apt.

Ingvar Kamprad, although now filthy rich, is still very down to earth. Yes he has enough money for a private jet, but he still travels economy class on commercial airliners. (I watched a documentary on Ikea).

This is definately a big step in making Cyprus more European. Who knows....maybe sooner or later a Carre Four (sp?) will open up here as well!

You better cancell your subscription to "behind the times" my friend :D
Speed camera are being installed at the end of the month. They will be installed in 5 phases, the first of which is due to start in November. I don't know about other areas but in Larnaka the lights by Cineplex will have 4 cameras, 2 fake and 2 real. I pass by there every day and I saw contruction crews digging ditches and passing firber-optic cables and electricity a few weeks ago. All they have to do now is unpack the cameras, connect them and hit the "ON" switch.
