How about you explain to me on what criteria you judge Makraios to have been a 'great leader' if you do not use the state of the RoC after 17 years of his leadership as a relevant criteria?
He was a great leader because unlike some others (Cleredes-Vassiliou for example) cared about his country above everything else. He had a voice of his own and he didn't become the puppet of anybody. Most other GCs of that time would simply take directions from Greece, but he didn't.
He was a great leader because Cypriots of that time decided he was a great leader by democratically electing him president with a huge majority several times. When such great majorities talk, what I or you say about his greatness doesn't matter.
