Should Cyprus leave the Euro?

Benefits and problems from the EU membership.

Should Cyprus leave the Euro?

Postby supporttheunderdog » Fri May 18, 2012 1:23 pm

A simple question: should Cyprus leave the Euro and (for example) reestablish the Cyprus pound to free the economy from some problems facing the Franco/German dominated Euro (and with the possibility of better insulation from the troubles with PIIGS) or are there still advantages to staying in, despeite the current crises??

At the monemt i dont have a particular view : All views welcome.

Likewise don't have a view other than it's a matter for the CYs.

... but one pretty obvious thing to say about all this Euro business is that it was always gonna have to face an inherent instability in that monetary union without fiscal and eventual political union (within a Federation) was always gonna be problematical... particularly of course when left to their own devices practically every EU government, practically without exception, were cooking the public account books to show far, far less public borrowing than was the reality.

If its going to stay in the Euro , Cyprus along with the other weakened EU members, actually needs Germany to leave.
As the euro slides and staggers from crisis to crisis the German export market booms !!!

Who on earth thought that they could harmonise such diverse economies under 1 currency, without federal union and central control of fiscal policy

Actually .....it was probably a Frenchman who thought he could reduce German strengths by attaching a load of non performing economies and that the Germans would just suck it up ....... They won't !!

I don't think anyone will exit the Euro. The dollar certainly wants to see it destroyed and it's doing its best to create the chaos which affects novel economies such as the Euro. Germany has to look to the long term as all others are doing and become a team player. Repair the cracks and get stronger.

IMHO I don't think there will be a Eurozone for much longer.

Excellent post!

Of course Cyprus should leave the €uro....

The €uro is a disaster for any country that cannot produce cars as well as Germany - you simply can't tie such diverse economies together...

Greece will leave and Cyprus will follow if she has any sense...

Alternatively, as you suggest Germany could leave....

Aren't we always?? We are after all British!!!

Levity aside, I have always been sceptical about the Euro, and indeed the whole thrust of EU devlopment into a new superstate, which I have suspected is a plan to do by stealth what Naploeon Bonepart and Adolf Hitler failed to do by war.
