Should Cyprus have real Search Engine? Like Yahoo?

Postby uher » Wed Sep 28, 2005 1:56 am

Hi,
I would really appreciate any comments and suggestions. I really need your opinion with this subject.
I am about to setup a real Search Engine for Cyprus. The system is almost the same as on Yahoo. I will not write about tools, options and specifications of the engine, but let's say, the engine will be among 5 most powerful in EU. Definitely, the most powerful Hellenic Search Engine. With database of 50.000.000 (cached into primary memory) pages, search performance is about 1600 to 1700 transactions per minute.
System has many tools and options including WAP. Same as Google and Yahoo.

Whole package is very expensive, cost about 25.000 CYP! So I would really like to know your opinion. Do we need in Cyprus real Search Engine? Would you use it?
Thanks for your support

The problem is that most Cypriot businesses don’t use the internet or have web sites as far as I can see...

A search engine would be great but given that others (yahoo!, google, etc.) can find information on just about everything, the thing I’d really like to see is the ability to find companies that sell certain products.

If you can’t get a list of companies that sell the product that you are looking for then click to their web site to compare pricing and specifications you might just as well trawl around the shops in Limassol or use ‘cousin-net’ and ask a Cypriot friend if any of their relatives supply the goods you are looking for.

Good point cyprusgrump, I have had nightmares trying to find things.

Perhaps a goods and services section could be added to this forum and members could contribute to a classified indexed thread.

How about it Admin!

Thanks for your reply.
I didn't want to go in details regarding search options, but let me give you the pre-made settings of the Crawler (Crawler is software which indexes all web and ftp servers and sorts information in database by categories. Actually, downloading into database all pages found).Crawler starts indexing from one IP to the last IP, in Cyprus or any other country. Let's say I enter range of IP's for Cyprus and Greece only (can add more, no limits) Any single server which is online and in range of allowed IP's will be crawled and indexed. As standard, Crawler revisits all servers weekly, and if any change automatically updates the database.

Now, the Crawler sorts information (based on content found) in the following order:
Web, Category, Enterprises, Newspapers, Music, Tenders, Donations, Draft laws, Judgments, Contacts, Dictionary, Branches, Sport, Pawn Register, Tourism, Persons, Namesdays, Library, Goods, Maps.

This means you can search generally in Web or limit your search to: Categories, Enterprises, Newspapers, Music, Tenders, Donations, Draft laws, Judgments, Contacts, Dictionary, Branches, Sport, Pawn Register, Tourism, Persons, Namesdays, Library, Goods, Maps.

As you can see, it will be possible to search for goods even if they don't have web site. How? Crawler has the option to include any other database (public or private). Off course, everybody will be able to add information online. With or without web site.

All of this search options will be also available on Mobile phones.

There are many settings in this SE. It's up to administrator to enable or disable options. I am talking about real competitor to Yahoo and Google software. In some cases, this software have even better performance. The only difference is in database size. I can also setup a farm of servers and have the database size as Yahoo. But I have to pay per server 25.000CYP and there is no need for that. 50.000.000 pages is more than enough.

In the age of technology and needs to personalize all kind of information services, Cyprus shouldn't stay in the dark. My personal opinion.

Can you suggest search tools you would like to have?
Thanks

Sorry, not being negative but it wouldn’t work.

All the information that I need on anything is available on Yahoo! or google.

When I want to search in Cyprus I need to find say, a supplier of colour laser printers. What I need is a list of suppliers with web site that I can browse, compare prices and specifications then find out where they are or ideally buy on line.

Your crawler bot may be awesome but it won’t; find that information for me because the dealers and distributors in Cyprus don’t have web sites.

So, I may be able to have additional information on Cyprus history or the Cyprus problem but I doubt if you could provide significantly more than say google and it wouldn’t help in the additional research into products and services that I believe people really need here.

I don't agree. I am web developer and I am dealing with both Yahoo and Google regularly. They do not display relevant results. Many Cypriot companies cannot be even found on the search engine. I did some research (before I decide) and I have right now a list of about 2000 Cypriot web sites. 60% of them are not even included in the database in both Yahoo and Google.

Additionally, they are including not relevant results and listings. You don't have an option to really limit the search in specific category. Let's say CD/DVD suppliers in Larnaca. You will have just few real results and thousands others (not useful) from US. If we have this Search Engine online, there will not be any other results. Only real CD/DVD suppliers in Larnaca. All results will be useful for you. On the other hand, on Yahoo and Google you have to loose time reading results description to find really useful link.

SEO is part of my job. You have to know that no SEO Guru can change Crawler settings, page ratings etc. which are pure SE settings. Their performance is optimized to make money and results are listed by "who pays more" not by real relevance and importance.

It is pure Google/Yahoo fault. I know their systems very well.
