WHEN questioned about the chances of the Cyprus national rugby team as they left for their game against Bulgaria on Saturday, team coach Paul Shanks stated: “This is our first league game since defeating Lebanon, and the team is as fit as I can expect.
“However, we will encounter a very different side to the one beaten last year in Paphos.
“Bulgaria on their home turf are going to be very difficult to overcome and we must take nothing for granted. The lads know this and I will be satisfied with a simple win and minimal injuries.”
The national side, currently leading European division 2c, are undefeated in five years of campaigning, having creamed the lower leagues and are now anticipating promotion from their current position at the end of the season.
Currently, Cyprus are in the same group as Finland, Bulgaria, Luxembourg and Greece. They were all beaten by such substantial margins that it resulted in the Moufflons being awarded the highest bonus points of any European country last year.
The first half of the season witnessed the home side amassing 257 points from five games, conceding only 38, with 3 matches to go.
The Moufflons travel to Pernick - where they will get in two days intensive training under what promises to be quite bleak weather conditions: non-stop rain.
The Bulgarians have no intention of repeating their miserable display of last year having now secured the professional services of Robert Antonella as director of rugby; he was an important part of the outstanding technical team that took France to three World Cups.
With a population of over 10 million and a rugby pedigree stretching back four decades, there is perhaps, a little matter of national pride involved in losing to the tiny Moufflons.
This year, Cyprus have so far played only one international when they met a very experienced Lebanese side in a friendly as the Cyprus Barbarians, and emerged on top 38-8 in Paphos, which surprised many observers, given the depth of experience in rugby league the Lebanon team brought to the game, having won the Rugby League Mediterranean Cup ten times, beating France by 40 points on the last occasion.
Following the Bulgaria game, Cyprus will next face old rivals Greece at the Paphiakos Stadium on May 26 and will hope to repeat their previous performances when they scored over 30 points in each game.
It will be the first time the home side have been allowed to charge for entry to the ground which may mean that the players will not have to make such a large contribution towards their expenses for the honour of playing for their country.
Theo Lenos, vice-president and team manager said: “This year APOEL reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time and the whole of Cyprus was hysterical with excitement.
“We have never lost to a European team in the last five years and no-one takes any notice.”
