i am moving to cyprus in march for 8 months and want to take my car and then bring it back to the uk in november. I was thinking of shipping it or would it be better to drive it. Would i have to pay any import duties even though i would be taking it back to the uk.

I’m not sure there is a definitive answer to your question!

I don’t believe you can keep a car here on UK plates for more than six months. Also, your vehicle may or may not be subject to import duty when it arrives – they just make it up as they go along I’m afraid. See many other threads on the thorny subject of bringing cars into the country.

Insurance would also be an issue – would your UK insurance company cover your vehicle for eight months here or would a local company insure a car on UK plates for eight months?

My personal recommendation would be to fly here buy a car, drive it for six months and then sell it again at the end – you can probably agree a price with the dealer before you take it away.

my uk insurance company will cover me, i have heard there is now a ferry to cyprus. Has anybody on the forum used it to bring a car in or can any one post a link to it
