Real shame he was a true legend in his field. His songs will live on for ever "Singer Dimitris Mitropanos died in an Athens hospital on Tuesday, the Athens-Macedonia News Agency reported, after suffering pulmonary edema caused by a heart attack.
He was 64.
Mitropanos was considered one of the foremost interpreters of Greek rebetika and popular folk music, known for his smooth vocals and dignified delivery."
He was wonderful, and he just got better with age. He was as good a performer at the age of 20 as he was at the age of 60. And he was pretty unique; he has legions of fans these days from the ages of 15-80. Not many people managed to do that in their career. Everyone loved Mitropanos. In the 90s and 2000s he was releasing material that was massively popular with youth, stuff like "Roza", "S'anazito sth Salonikh" and "Ta ladadika" - kids know the lyrics to these songs by heart. Legend.
Let's also remember the great Marios Tokas who collaborated with Mitropanos, writing many of his later successes like those I mentioned. 2 greats that passed away early in recent years. I booked tickets to see Mitropanos in concert last October, but he was too poorly to fly to London and he did not make it. The concert still went ahead without him. A great shame, I would have loved to see him perform.
