Short-term (2 weeks) internet access?

Postby eirini_cy » Mon Apr 16, 2012 10:50 am

I'll be back in Cyprus next month and staying at my Aunt's in Kato Polemidia for 2 weeks who doesn't have internet... and I may have to do some online work so does anyone have a suggestion for wireless internet there - is it possible to get a USB kit for internet or an internet card?

Not sure, in the past I was able to pick up some CityCell wireless - but the signal was very faint and I see on their website it doesn't intend to cover the area...

Does anyone know the best option?

I've been looking for the same thing.
I've found this: http://www.cytamobile-vodafone.com/Default.aspx?ID=581 (you'll need to translate it - Google Chrome did it for me)

Looks to be the job, but you'd need either:
  • A 3G modem
  • A mobile wifi router with inbuilt 3G modem
  • A mobile phone

For me, I'm not sure about the outlay for the equipment just for a holiday. On a technical note, I'm not certain that the SIM that you'll get would work for tethering in a mobile phone.
Do you know whether Kato Polemidia has 3G coverage?

If I find any more info, I'll let you know.

Wow! This is great, thanks so much.

I can't remember 100% if Polemidia has 3G coverage..hmm it's close enough to Limassol (my aunts house is literally a minutes drive after the big (horrid) roundabout turnoff).

I will check this out, sounds good :)) thanku!

You may check for city wide wifi services (You might need to ask someone in area if they have coverage)

Citycell (http://www.citycellhotspot.com/index.html)
PrimeTel Red Wifi (http://redwifi.hotspot.thunderworx.net/ ... px?lang=EN)

Such services wont requirte any special hardware and you can purchase plan based on your need , only problem its bit costly but suitable for short term.

Thanks for the response XNTric,

I do pick up the Citycell but very faintly and it drops out quite a lot - I contacted them and they said you need a good signal to use it... so I'm waiting for their next reply about antennas and so on...

Maybe the CYTA mobile will be the best option in the end

Or you can just click "English" at the top of the page ;) You can also check MTN http://www.mtn.com.cy/index.cfm/id/341/lang/english

You could just buy an internet dongle! The price of a dongle is fairly cheap, but I'd imagine the cost of using it was very expensive compared to normal internet access (though if you don't have normal internet access, it's the only way).

I would like to be familiar with this as well. I would like to know if there are those prepaid internet kits that you plug-in to your USB ports and just start surfing away.

Though internet will not really be the primary concern of my trip, it would really be nice to still get connected whenever I go, or better yet plug the sim card on my mobile just so we could be assisted with the maps and other data hungry applications.
