Indeed! Just think what if.....

Winston Churchill:

"If it were not for the bravery of the Greeks and their courage, the outcome of WWII would be undetermined." (Paraphrased from one of his speeches to the British Parliament on 24 April 1941)

Sir Robert Antony Eden, Minister of War and the Exterior of Britain 1940-1945, Prime Minister of Britain 1955-1957:

"Regardless of what the future historians shall say, what we can say now, is that Greece gave Mussolini an unforgettable lesson, that she was the motive for the revolution in Yugoslavia, that she held the Germans in the mainland and in Crete for six weeks, that she upset the chronological order of all German High Command's plans and thus brought a general reversal of the entire course of the war and we won." (Paraphrased from a speech of his to the British parliament on 24/09/1942)

Sir Harold Leofric George Alexander, British Marshal during WWII:

"It would not be an exaggeration to say that Greece upset the plans of Germany in their entirety forcing her to postpone the attack on Russia for six weeks. We wonder what would have been Soviet Union's position without Greece." (Paraphrased from a speech of his to the British parliament on 28 October 1941)

George VI, King of Great Britain 1936-1952:

"The magnificent struggle of Greece, was the first big turn of WWII" (Paraphrased from a speech of his to the parliament in May 1945)

Joseph Vissarionovich Tzougasvili Stalin:
"I am sorry because I am getting old and I shall not live long to thank the Greek People, whose resistance decided WWII." (From a speech of his broadcast by the Moscow radio station on 31 January 1943 after the victory of Stalingrad and the capitulation of marshal Paulus)

Georgy Constantinovich Zhoucov 1896-1974 Marshal of the Soviet Army:
"If the Russian people managed to raise resistance at the doors of Moscow, to halt and reverse the German torrent, they owe it to the Greek People, who delayed the German divisions during the time they could bring us to our knees." (Quote from his memoirs on WWII)

Moscow, Radio Station to Greece:
"You fought unarmed and won, small against big. We owe you gratitude, because you gave us time to defend ourselves. As Russians and as people we thank you." (When Hitler attacked the U.S.S.R.)

So you really do think that 250 brave EOKA fighters defeated the British Empire. OK.

Perhaps you can get together 250 CF EOKA supporters and throw out the Turkish army in the North.
After all there are only 40000 to deal with....should not be a problem !

PS. Don't forget your passports and allow extra time these days for crossing the border !

Our newly discoverd friends will do this for us, while we watch soap operas on tv or wage war through Internet. We used to call them the "Jewish State" and now, miraculously, they became Israel. Even arch Palestinian supporter and President to be Mrs Theocharous, has conveniently forgotten the plight of the Palestinians and started learning Jewish!

They are not your friends ...that's for sure !

They are snuggling up at the moment because they think that they can relieve you of any gas/oil revenue coming your way.

There are many Israeli businesses and immigrants based in the North now.
How do you feel about them contributing to the economy there and living in your houses and sellng your land.

The same applies to your friends the Russians. There are thousands living in the North living in your houses.

Ladies and Gents.

I am happy to announce that I got the answer I was seeking under this thread. Here it is:

1. According to direct and indirect admissions of the representative og the mighty Empire in this forum, the distinguished forum member Don Kelley, the Empire was defeated militarily by EOKA because the 40.000 18-21 year old British conscripts, the TMT cutthroats and the TC auxiliary police force, did not manage to subdue the 250 EOKA fighters who were assisted by the murderous 7-16 year old GREEK Cypriot unarmed school children who were throwing paper pamphlets, sometimes even rocks (I will admit) at them and were demonstrating in the streets carrying Greek flags. (I suppose that the latter, by itself, was enough to intimidate the 40.000 conscripts and the rest of them).

Quoting Don:
“Hold on a minute 250 GCs? didn't someone else say all the young GC boys were in the EOKA? It looks like you've inherited the GC habit of being economical with the truth.
50 million Brits my arse, more like young conscripts between the age of 18-21.”

2. According to the latest admission of the advocate of the Empire and of the Annan Plan, distinguished forum member Bananiot, although EOKA had not been subdued till 1959, the British blackmailed Makarios to sign the Zurich-London agreements by pulling from their sleeve the card of his alleged homosexuality.
Evidently, Makarios failed to or had the decency not to pull a similar dirty trick (card) in respect to many of his counterparts around the negotiating tables.

Quoting Bananiot:
“I never said 1957 but 1959 since the talks at Lancaster House were held then and the Brits obviously had something under their sleeve to force Makarios to agree. Perhaps you think it had something to do with Makarios being a crypto homosexual as it was suggested in another thread and for which you did not ask for evidence.”

cyprus37670.html

The facts and realities deriving from the previous admissions are the following:

1. The Empire, till 1959, when the Zurich-London agreements were signed, had not managed to subdue Grivas, EOKA and the GREEK Cypriot youth militarily and was forced to negotiate and try to find a political solution, JUST like Grivas had intended when staging the EOKA struggle. Therefore, the Empire was DEFEATED militarily by EOKA and the basic goal of EOKA had been achieved up to that point.
According to the representative of the Empire, the military defeat was the result of the inability of the 40.000 British troops to subdue EOKA. It is irrelevant whether this inability was due to the incompetency of the "conscripts" as Don suggests or the successful conduct of the armed struggle by Grivas as I support. The end result is the same.

2. Now, according to the Annan Plan/Empire advocate, honourable member of this forum Bananiot, the Empire, although it had not managed to subdue Grivas and EOKA by 1959, nevertheless, it managed to impose a political solution which insured its presence on the island, by pulling some dirty card from its sleeve. According to the new theory of our distinguished member, this “card” was neither the fact that the British had Grivas under their grip (as initially alleged) nor that EOKA had lost the support of the Cypriots (as later suggested) but information about the alleged homosexuality of Makarios.
According to my opinion, it is irrelevant which “card” was pulled from the sleeve of the Empire. i.e., wheter that was the alleged homo sexual activities of Makarios or the card of the partition as I support. The fact remains that Makarios AND Karamanlis failed to grab the opportunity offered to them by Grivas and EOKA to conclude a better deal (Harding’s proposal in 1956 even better terms for the constitution pof the young republic).

Further to all the above, I think that the question put forward under this thread, i.e., “Why was Britain defeated by EOKA” has been answered by the representative of the Empire (see point No 1 above) and this assembly (thread) can be adjourned.

I therefore declare the debate on the topic of this thread as CLOSED.

P.S. 1 Besides, since long the discussion is being derailed to issues like the homosexuality of Makarios, whether the world would be under Nazi occupation today if it wasn’t for the 18-21 year old British conscripts etc., whether the Annan Plan did grant or not the south EEZ to Britain etc.

P.S. 2 I plan to start a new topic titled “What forced Makarios/Karamanlis to sign the Zurich-London Agreements”?

Or. Why did the Turkish invasion succeed?

What do you all think about it folks?

Kimon, I hear your cousin in France voted for Jean-Marie Le Pen. Does it run in the family?
