Cyprus, could be great!

Postby Dionysiou » Fri Apr 13, 2012 2:03 pm

Fellas, i'm here because i'm interested in living in cyprus.

My father is cypriot by birth but we live in autralia. Am i still a citizen?

I hear that military service is compulsory over there, do i qualify?

Any general advice?

You are not a citizen but you can easily get the citizenship. If you come to live in Cyprus you will have to serve in the army but how long you will serve will depend on your age. Probably 3 - 6 months.

Megale, come for a trial 'holiday' first. Come check it out and then decide.

Military service is not to be entered into lightly because the 1 Million belligerent Turkish troops are ready to strike at any time! Be sure you love Cyprus with all your heart and mind before you give up the safety net of shark-infested Oz seas and beer bloated ex-Brits. :D

I'm not patriotic, I just need a change of pace. I'm 20 and military service isn't an issue, as long as it's no deskjob. I could come for a holiday first but i know i won't. I'll just rock up and hopefully they put me into service ASAP. If they give me food, water and a bed thats it! Thats a bloody holiday in my mind. During which time i can reflect on what my next move will be.

Don't bother .

Even though you have South Cyprus parentage you will be classified as a 'Charlie' and not received well. The cost of living is very high as we are in the Eurozone and the country will be bankrupt very soon.

Those nasty Turks are going to invade any day now so keep well away.

Dionysiou, go for it. Why not? Who cares if you'll be called a Charlie; the people that say that are ignorant idiots. It is really honourable that you are keen to do the military service. It is the LEAST we can do as Cypriots to honour our country, after so many gave their lives to defend this land. I find it disgusting that about 30-40% of Cypriot youngsters avoid the military service by pretending to be mentally handicapped and receiving an exemption.

Conscription is a form of slavery! Mlitary service should be voluntary.
