Cyprus Mount Everest Expedition 2012

Postby bill cobbett » Thu Apr 12, 2012 9:33 pm

As we learnt a few weeks ago the CY Mountaineer George Andreou is attempting to plant the Flag of the Republic atop the World's Highest Peak.

Yesterday after a long trek GA reached Base Camp at 5364m.

So this very brave attempt is underway and we can follow progress at a dedicated FB Page at... http://www.facebook.com/CyprusEverestEx ... 12?sk=wall

What's 'very brave' about it ?

The Brits used to climb up there in the 1920s with very basic warm clothing and equipment.

They also did not have oxygen.......now that is very brave.

It's good that you are learning new things. You do need educating after all.

I didn't realise that all (cowardly ) South Cypriots are megalomaniacs.

the following site has some useful information in contrasting the 1924 equipment with modern kit
http://www.everest1953.co.uk/1924v2007.php

The earky teams used oxygen: George Mallory did so reluctantly at first: in 1922 he reached 8225 meters without it. He used it more in the 1924 trip.
Some people theorise that Mallory and Irvine got to the top but died on the way down, in 1924. I have my doubts.

Everest was later first climbed without oxygen by Messner and Habeler in 1978

A long overdue progress report...

Yesterday the CY Everest Expedition reported they had reached 7,300 metres.

A couple of hours ago they reported they were starting a 2 day rest period at Camp 3 after which they would attempt, weather permitting, to reach Camp 4 on the infamous South Col, the last camp before an assault on the summit, which will appear to them as a pyramid of rock towering above them. After Camp 4 they are in the Death Zone.

This is what Wiki says about the South Col...

"...The South Col usually refers to the southern col between Mount Everest and Lhotse, the first and fourth highest mountains in the world. When climbers attempt to climb Everest from the southeast ridge in Nepal, their final camp (usually Camp IV) is situated on the South Col. The South Col is typically ravaged by high winds, leaving it free of significant snow accumulation..."

and

... "Once on the South Col, climbers have entered the death zone — Altitude sickness is a significant threat at this elevation and can easily prove fatal. It is also difficult to sleep, and most climbers' digestive systems have significantly slowed or completely stopped. This is because it is more efficient at this altitude for the body to use stored energy sources than to digest new food. Most climbers will begin using supplemental oxygen here and have a maximum of only two or three days for making summit bids. Clear weather and low winds are critical factors in deciding whether to make a summit attempt. If weather does not cooperate within these short few days, climbers are forced to descend, many all the way back down to Base Camp. Climbers rarely get a second chance to return to the South Col in a specific expedition..."

The height of Everest is 8,848 m or 29,029 ft

I trust that as well as hoisting the flag of the Glorious Cypriot Republic, that the boys take up a fogou to lay on a souvla for the fellow summiters.
