Russian Slap To Turkey On Cyprus Issue - You Are An Illegal Occupying Power

Sunday, April 08, 2012 Hellas Frappe

In a surprise move that sends multiple messages, at all directions, Russia just slammed all Turkish positions regarding its alleged rights in Cyprus' EEZ, and with a harsh tone said that the North section of the divided island is under"Turkish occupation". With regards to land rights, the Russian foreign ministry asked its citizens to refrain from purchasing property "in the territory of the so-called" Turkish Republic in Northern Cyprus ", which is occupied by Turkey "and only recognized only by Ankara."

In fact the Deputy Director of Press and Information Zacharova Maria, was quoted by reporters as saying that "this part of Cyprus is occupied and owned by independent and internationally recognized Republic of Cyprus and added that the Security Council of the United Nations strongly condemned the illegal decision Resolutions 1983 and 1984 ".

"Buying a property in occupied Cyprus is illegal, since several properties belong to Greek Cypriots legally who fled their homes after the invasion of Turkish occupation troops in 1974. The property market is at great risk because it is under legal lawsuits filed by the owners," warned Zacharova.

According to him, under Cyprus' Criminal Code on issues of property, this act is illegal because it does not have the consent of the legal owner. "It is fraud and punishable by imprisonment for seven years!. The (Cyrpus) Republic's rights are solid and cannot be questioned".

Russia's intervention was pivotal, since it automatically recognized the sovereignty of the Cyprus Republic since it aligns itself with the Republic's policies and its positions on its property rights. A report on defencenet said that most importantly the statements also are a clear message to Ankara that it does not recognize -de facto- situations that would legitimize Turkish participation in Cyprus' EEZ, such as research, mining, etc.

Maybe, but as cynic (in the modern sense rather than like the ancient Greek "dogs" ) or skeptic, when it comes to the great game of geopolitics, and particular (but not limited to) when either the USA or Russia are involved I am always highly sceptical about motives, the more so with Putin involved. Could the price of Putin's support for Cyprus (and Greece) be one we do not want to pay? He amd his cronies have raped Russia (for man on modest income he is apparently personally very wealthy, reputedly the wealthiet in Russia) and I question whether Cyprus (and Greece) is at risk of bending over to be taken from behind.

"ancien greek dogs"?

Cynicism (Greek: κυνισμός), in its original form, refers to the beliefs of an ancient school of Greek philosophers known as the Cynics (Greek: Κυνικοί, Latin: Cynici). Their philosophy was that the purpose of life was to live a life of Virtue in agreement with Nature. This meant rejecting all conventional desires for wealth, power, health, and fame, and by living a simple life free from all possessions. As reasoning creatures, people could gain happiness by rigorous training and by living in a way which was natural for humans. They believed that the world belonged equally to everyone, and that suffering was caused by false judgments of what was valuable and by the worthless customs and conventions which surrounded society. Many of these thoughts were later absorbed into Stoicism.
The first philosopher to outline these themes was Antisthenes, who had been a pupil of Socrates in the late 5th century BCE. He was followed by Diogenes of Sinope, who lived in a tub on the streets of Athens.[2] Diogenes took Cynicism to its logical extremes, and came to be seen as the archetypal Cynic philosopher. He was followed by Crates of Thebes who gave away a large fortune so he could live a life of Cynic poverty in Athens. Cynicism spread with the rise of Imperial Rome in the 1st century, and Cynics could be found begging and preaching throughout the cities of the Empire. It finally disappeared in the late 5th century, although some have claimed that early Christianity adopted many of its ascetic and rhetorical ideas.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cynicism

P.S. Could not hear any dog barking in all of that.

Origin of the Cynic nameThe name Cynic derives from Ancient Greek κυνικός (kynikos), meaning "dog-like", and κύων (kyôn), meaning "dog" (genitive: kynos).[3] One explanation offered in ancient times for why the Cynics were called dogs was because the first Cynic, Antisthenes, taught in the Cynosarges gymnasium at Athens.[4] The word Cynosarges means the place of the white dog. It seems certain, however, that the word dog was also thrown at the first Cynics as an insult for their shameless rejection of conventional manners, and their decision to live on the streets. Diogenes, in particular, was referred to as the Dog,[5] a distinction he seems to have revelled in, stating that "other dogs bite their enemies, I bite my friends to save them."[6] Later Cynics also sought to turn the word to their advantage, as a later commentator explained:

There are four reasons why the Cynics are so named. First because of the indifference of their way of life, for they make a cult of indifference and, like dogs, eat and make love in public, go barefoot, and sleep in tubs and at crossroads. The second reason is that the dog is a shameless animal, and they make a cult of shamelessness, not as being beneath modesty, but as superior to it. The third reason is that the dog is a good guard, and they guard the tenets of their philosophy. The fourth reason is that the dog is a discriminating animal which can distinguish between its friends and enemies. So do they recognize as friends those who are suited to philosophy, and receive them kindly, while those unfitted they drive away, like dogs, by barking at them.[7]

Being a Greek I very well know what cynic and cynical means. BUT. The question is, what has cynicism meant then and what does it mean now? Raw reasoning, raw behavior. Defiance, even contempt to public opinion and common beliefs. Right?. So, how different is the ancient meaning of cynicism from the moder one?
