In its modern sense it has moved away from the practice of an aesthetic virtuous life didsdaining material things to a belief on the part of the modern Cynic that no-one acts from a sense of Altruism but everyone has a baser personal motive for helping others as it may provide a personal advantage.

Our flirt with Putin's Russia has brought about total isolation of Cyprus within the EU. This was sited only yesterday in the confidential reports of of our Brussels permanent staff. We are the scapegoat of the EU because they see us the Russian Trojan Horse within the EU.

Very true. Therefore, to come back to the topic. Being cynical, Cyprus MUST give a "foot hold" to the Russians in the East Med. Matter of National Advantage. After all, they helped us financially (2.5b) while no others did (EU, US, UK etc). Additionally, THEY (and the French) sold us weapons when we needed them braking the Anglo-American embargo.

Absolutely - perhaps we can parley this into some greater interest from others in to a solution in our favour.

Never before has so much rubbish been condensed into just 3 lines. The Russians will not save us like they did not save us in 1974 when war between Greece and Turkey served their interests which amounted to the break up of the south east wing of NATO. We made a choice to be part of the EU and we must stick with this. Already we are behaving (thanks to Christofias) as the representatives of Russia to the EU, sacrificing our interests for the benefits of Putin's Russia. We tried these tactics prior to 1974 but we have not learned anything from the calamity that ensued. It is totally treacherous to even contemplate such behaviour when we should be talking about the need to join NATO. Our survival is on the line and the loan we secured from Putin (loan that we will repay with interest) perhaps it is an indication of our behaviour within the EU that has made us the black sheepm of our European partners. Kimon wants to give a foot hold to Russia. What a stupid man!

IMO that's a good thing. EU should be afraid of us. 8) Christofias has already proved we are nuts...

We should rely on our own forces, and the only way to do that it's by building a large-scale WMD system.

After Mari? You trust the CNG to be responsible for looking after anything more lethal than a pea-shooter?

The EU and Russia are toatlly compatible and so Cyprus can help forge the relationship further. The only anti-EU and anti-Russia forces around are the pro-Turkey UK-Brits and USA.
