My own understnding of EOKA B was that it was funded / supplied by the Junta and after formation in 1971was committed to the overthrow / Murder of Big Mak but was not strong enough (or Popular enough) to organise a coup on its own - the Colonels then evidently dispensed with EOKA B as their tool in favour of using the National Guard.
Who funded the Junta?
I am very well aware of LBJ's comments to the Greek Ambassador and the US led machinations against Papandreou who was apparently for reducing Greece's slavishness towards the USA and opening friendly relations with the USSR and Soviet Blck countries on its borders. The CIA most certainly had a very heavy hand in events.
Big Mak was probably attacked as he too was not seen as suffiently pro USA but possibly pro USSR - a-moral if not immoral power politics at work again.
This whole mess "The Cyprus problem" can be directly traced back to Big Mac's naive policies concerning Cyprus' foreign policies and negligent leadership. Growing up in Cyprus before 74, couldnt help but have lots of respect for him, nevertheless his policies were flawed
