US Marines arrive in Australia to ‘secure’ offshore gas/oil fields! Secure it from whom? Oh yeah ..... China?

Look out Cyprus there will soon be USraeli boot’s on the Island of Cyprus, as the US does the same on behalf of Israel to protect the regions gas/oil reserves. And there will be sod all you can do about it! If they do not get agreement to put their military in the RoC, then they will threaten sanctions until they get what they want. They are as predictable as sun-up.

To paraphrase; ‘Welcome to my parlour said the fly to the spider!!!!!’ Where you find gas/oil, USrael are not far behind, offering protection from 'terrorist' States and to protect the Islands freedom and democracy!

You are misinformed. Australia's control of these gas fields is uncontested politically, and given that China has neither allies/basing arrangements, nor oceanic force-projection capabilities, it is not in a position to challenge Australia's control of these resources now or anytime in the next 25 years. In any case, China has signed 20 year contracts for gas deliveries from these fields, and are the largest customer.

The immediate goal of stationing US forces in Australia is to be able to close or at least control the Lombok strait should Indonesia be unwilling or unable to if the need arises. Closing this strait along with the Malacca Strait (using forces stationed in Singapore) cuts china off from virtually all of her energy imports.

Australia and USA have been in an alliance since 1951 (and which included Australian involvement in Vietnam ) - the USA's interest is in fact more likely to be the Moslem nations immediatly to to the North of Australia ie Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, etc., since for China they would probably seek to use the Philipines again.

As for the Cyprus gas reserves they have no need to put forces here - expect the Israelis to take the lead here - otherwise look for British offers of service from the SBA, as proxys for the Americans, or for the USA to use its Turkish or Greek bases: too much pandering to Putin and Russian interests by Cyprus and the US might "consent" to some further Turkish Rhetoric / moves - all the time publically keeping their hands clean - just as they as it suited them to allow Greece and Turkey to do their dirty work in 1974, with the assistance of Grivas and EOKA B and Dentash and the TMT as their local stooges.

Grivas was dead in 1974. And his second in command, George Karoussos, was arrested by the EOKA B fraction which was under the control of the new junta of Athens (Ioannides) and was sent to Castellorizo, where he was arrested by the military police and brought to Athens were he was closely watched. With Grivas alive there would be no coup against Makarios.

I am very well aware of LBJ's comments to the Greek Ambassador and the US led machinations against Papandreou who was apparently for reducing Greece's slavishness towards the USA and opening friendly relations with the USSR and Soviet Blck countries on its borders. The CIA most certainly had a very heavy hand in events.

Big Mak was probably attacked as he too was not seen as suffiently pro USA but possibly pro USSR - a-moral if not immoral power politics at work again.
