Congressman Berman Urges Reassessment of US Policy in Cyprus

Postby bill cobbett » Tue Apr 03, 2012 9:18 pm

US Congressman Howard Berman, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, has urged the Secretary of State Hilary Clinton to re-evaluate US policy on CY, citing Turkey's Colonial Ambitions on CY with the importation of the Illegal Settlers and the recent threats of the use of force and war which as we know were meant to to interfere with the work of the American Noble exploration company as well as in CY's EEZ.

Berman asks that the US express support for the sovereignty of CY "forcefully".

With Turkey being so pivitol in the current situation in Syria, the chance of the US State Department paying any attention is remote.

:o Ah --- I've got it. I misunderstood your brief line, thinking that you thought I had expressed a view in the reference which contracticted what I said in this thread. Now I see what you mean. You think that the article that starts the reference thread contradicts my view expressed in this thread.

Not really. I think that USA just wants as few problems as possible to arise in the Eastern Mediterranean. If the naval exercise referred to in the other thread is a veiled warning to Turkey, that doesn't mean that USA wants to take any agressive action against Turkey while the Middle East remains such a big problem. After all, Secretary of State Clinton was in Turkey last weekend talking about Syria and Iran, not in Athens talking about Cyprus. I think that just about sums up the priorities.

It reminds me of the Iraqi invasion in Kuwait twenty years ago.

At that time there was a lot of talk in Cyprus, that if we had oil, like Kuwait, the Americans would come to the rescue.

Just goes to show the self-interest of the Americans will always overcome doing what is right and why we must show them that it is in their better interest to help Cyprus than cosy up to the Turks. The Anti American/Pro Cuba/pro Chavez/Pro Syria stance of the current government is not the way to win friends and influence people.
