Sir
Offensive Advertising of Illegally occupied Cyprus
I am writing to object in the strongest possible terms to your shameless promotion of tourism to the illegally occupied North of Cyprus.
This area was illegally occupied in a two stage operation in July and August 1974, in particular after August 14th by which time whatever the justification arising out the Greek Junta inspired coup had vanished with the collapse both of the Junta and the Coup, by July 21st 1974.
The illegal nature of the occupation and the puppet regime is recognised by the UN in various resolutions.
Turkey is illegally occupying 37% of an EU country.
The whole of the second stage of Operation Attila from 14 August 1974 was a war of naked aggression on the part of Turkey and it resulted in as many as 150,000 Greek speaking Cypriots being dispossessed through ethnic cleansing. I believe some 80% of the land in the occupied zone legally belongs to Greek Speaking Cypriots, which has been recognised by amongst others the European Court of Human Rights. Turkey has since pursued an illegal campaign of settlement to permanently change the demographics of the Island. The settlers have put in the property of the dispossessed.
Other properties have been illegally developed and sold, many to British Citizens, which causes resentment in the South, particularly amongst those who lost land and were forced out in 1974.
Holiday makers who likewise travel to the North are seen as supporting the illegal regime.
Please therefore stop promoting travel to Northern Cyprus, as it is grossly offensive to do so.
