My observation was purely on the design not the origin of the design: a round arched bridge has different engineering/design considerations to a pointed arch bridge. The British were also probabaly building pointed arch bridges before the Ventians came to Cyprus: as an example one has the Devil's Bridge in Mid Wales dated to 11th Century. - Durham Elvet to 1160 or so.

Tried to drive in to Roudias bridge via Vretsia. Shame to see a place that was probably abandoned due to inter communal/ethnic conflict. Got lost and did not find the bridge and had an epic drive out up a very steep and loose track.

Lovely scenery, met a lovely family from Nicosia who gave me a hand to extract the car from a gravel ramp I got stuck in.

That village wasn't abandoned because of any "inter communal conflict". It was abandoned as a direct result of the Turkish invasion.

I tidied up the Mosque courtyard last time I was there. The building was in excellent condition, signs that the RoC had replaced the roof and whitewashed the walls; but there were a load of teabags and assorted snack-packs thrown around. Was it OK when you went there?

I don't think you can drive to the bridge. You need to get out and walk, down the track, through the woods and up the river.

No, the ones in Greece are more like the ones found in Turkey. After all, Greece was borne out of Ottomania whereas Cyprus has its own unique culture.

Yes, I was at Gelefos a couple of years ago but I couldn't be bothered driving even more zigzags to get to the other ones.

To do it right you need to stay overnight at Kato Platres.

GreekIslandGirl, are you implying some kind of (bridging) link between Greece and Cyprus just because the style and period of these stone bridges are similar? That would be ridiculous, surely?

Implying connection where there is none is her sole (failed) mission here!

Oracle, for similarities to Greece you need to look to West Turkey.

How ridiculous you sound. These bridges ARE in Cyprus!

You would rather revise history and attribute them to Turks than to the native Cypriots.

Patheticboy has over-influenced you now, methinks.

Oh yeh right.

I can really see Byzantine Architects and Builders travelling for projects to Cyprus from all the way in Epirus!

I hope they didn't forget their American Express!
