Christofias: criticism of me is a democratic right...but

Published on March 21, 2012

Players in the international community, and specifically the EU, want to see the re-election of President Demetris Christofias, he said today during his annual televised press conference on the status of the Cyprus issue.

These international players tell Christofias they cannot imagine the Republic of Cyprus without his presidency, he told reporters in answer to a question on whether he would run again as president next year.

Christofias also said that while criticism of him was a democratic right, “at the same time democracy means respecting the Constitution and official institutions “by those who criticise.

He also referred to the dissent within the National Council on his handling of the Cyprus issue, which according to the UN could be heading for a deadlock.

“I have repeatedly said that as President of the Republic, I undertake my responsibilities. However, it is evident that building unity presupposes mutual respect and common positions. This applies to everyone, not just the President of the Republic,” Christofias said.

“I do not mind criticism. I have full respect for all views. I seek dialogue and collective reflection.”

Christofias said it was imperative to remain committed to the strategic aim of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, as described in UN resolutions.

The painful compromise of a bizonal, bicommunal federation was the only option that could lead to, and end, the Turkish occupation.

Is there space available at the Athalassa nut house?

Can he produce independent objective verifiable evidence of these claims?

you guys are overly critical of Christofias. I don't live in Cyprus and I am not exposed to the same issues that you are.

However, We have had many a President from many a political parties left and right. We all know that unless the UN and the international community that sat around the table and came up with ALL Resolutions condemning the Turkish invasion, occupation and non- recognition of the occupied area as "trnc", exert pressure to get the Turks out, nothing will change.

I believe changes will happen once the gas is extracted and the EU sees first hand the benefits, only then will we see action. And I bet the British will be the first to say Turks Out Of Cyprus Now.

Thank you Brit. Have you written to Cameron to tell him that you feel the situation in Cypurs is unfair?

It be good if the Turks of UK came together and demanded Haringay be annexed to Turkey. See how the red arsed monkeys called lords will manage with that. Hypocrisy everywhere

Yes they do! An imagined agreement like the one that you have ;) ... because you don't have any real agreement that talks about partnership or any right of yours for a Turkish state in Cyprus. The agreement that we have prohibits any kind of partition and says that Cyprus will be one and indivisible with one president who should be Greek Cypriot. You should finally read that agreement so you will know what it actually says

You Turks told the TC's to declare independence, so you have no internationally recognised anything!

The occupied areas are only recognised as a haven for Brits on the run!
