If in Paris, the Eifel tower is a must. So is the Colosseum in Rome, CN tower in Toronto etc.

But Cyprus has no such offering, a major monument, a unique project, the biggest ferris wheel... nothing to speak of.
Yeah, there are beautiful beaches, scenic mountains and a few monasteries/museums but nothing extraordinary.

Perhaps it's time to do something about it. Something that would attract tourists all year round.

Any ideas out there?

You can come and visit all those pointless wind farms that are sprouting up all over the place... :x

Are you still bitching about those windmills?
The pointless wind farms were providing your household with electricity when Mari blew up.

I remember, you were suggesting a nuclear power station for the island.
Can you imagine if that nuclear station blew up?
Accidents do happen, especially in Cyprus.

Really...?

For the past three days the huge wind farm opposite my house has been standing idle... No wind you see. No wind, no electricity... do you see...?

So unless is was constantly windy when Mari was blown up (I don't think it blew up)then no, the wind far wasn't providing my electricity. Perhaps that is why we had to have the power cuts. No wind you see. No wind, no electricity... do you see...?

And if the wind-farms were supplying cheap, clean electricity we wouldn't be paying so much for it surely? But we are... because we have to pay twice - once for the wind farm and once for the backup generation for when it isn't windy like this week. No wind, no electricity... do you see...?

Luckily people are beginning to get wise to the huge con that is 'green' wind power...

Wind farms cost us a fortune in subsidies, don't produce power when we need it and can increase CO2 production because of the backup generation required just in case the wind drops. No wind, no electricity... do you see...?

I assume that's a recent picture, not?

It's funny you know... I installed quite a few wind turbines (small scale up to 5kw) on private properties situated usually away from the grid (cottages, farm houses etc)
The most common complain was = My windmill is not turning...Why?
No wind, of course. It puzzles me why people are surprised to watch the idle turbines on a calm day. Their feeling is... someone rob them of their money or sold them a faulty windmill. I had complains from not just hicks but also educated customers who(supposedly) understand the concept of a windmill operation.
The same goes for the solar panels. On a cloudy day, the amp meter is low so they call... what is wrong with my solar array, no power is coming thru? Why?

And yet, you ask No wind, no electricity... do you see...?

So you agree that the things are useless for providing a reliable electricity supply then?

You admit that they require an equivalent amount of generating capacity to back them up when the wind is not blowing? So we are in effect paying twice for the generating capacity?

At last! :D

The turbines are not useless but produce only when the wind is there. An added source of power to the grid, just like nuclear, hydropower, diesel, solar etc.
All these sources are connected to the grid and are switched on-off according to the demand. At Vasilikos power plant, 5 generators are present but only 2 or 3 or 4 or all are running to satisfy demand. So while only 3 are running, this does not mean the others are useless.

As the wind farms expand more power is fed to the grid so less generator units are running at Vasilikos... cutting down on CO2 and pollution.

Unless we come up with an alternative source of energy, more and more renewable energy systems will gain ground due to less and less fossil fuel availability.
As for your favorable nuclear power, have in mind that uranium deposits are depleting as fast as the fossil fuels.
