A new worrying development in Email scamming in Cyprus...

Today I received a letter in the mail which had my name and address handwritten on an envelope from someone in S.Africa, and inside was a printout of a standard email scam that basically requests that you assist someone to transfer huge amounts of money etc, which I’m sure everyone is familiar with by now and just ignores!

In the past it was normal to receive these stupid things about once a month or maybe two months but I stress… in email not in the bloody post!

Which brings me to the all important question… how on earth did this individual/s get my full name and address given that I have NEVER posted my address anywhere on the internet?

Has one or more of Cyprus’ major commercial institutions like the Bank of Cyprus, CYTA, EAC, or the Water Board, who have our full details, gotten hacked?

This worrying incident also coincides with the March 1st new privacy policies of Google you may have heard about, and although I don’t use Gmail myself I notice that the scammer does!

I’ll be paying a visit to the police tomorrow to inform them of this new development in the hope of alerting Cypriot authorities that there's something fishy going on in our country...

Regards, GR.

They are going back to the old methods! The first time I saw this type of scam was in the mid-80's, a very badly typed letter from (guess where?) Nigeria!

Get Real - Since you haven't had much positive response up to now, may I be allowed to sidetrack slightly?
Last year I received an unsolicited phone call from a company who did damp proofing. When I asked where they had got my name from, a heavily accented Scottish lady said ' We bought the list from CYTA!! She arranged to take me off the list, but I never got back to CYTA to see if they did, in fact, sell lists. Much easier to go through the 'phone book I would have thought.

Also tell them about the worrying development in the number of pseudo-Cypriot forums springing up in far-flung, god-forsaken lands. Scamming Cyprus, for sure.

Erm name addresses and all that are not so private! If you buy stuff online then expect to get your information leaked somewhere.

These Internet scammers of Cyprus, and its problems, can operate from anywhere in the world - and they DO!

I've heard you're doing your bit, GR!, to highlight their low-brow antics, as they drown in their antipodean sea of confusion, hypocrisy and double standards. Financial gain on the back of Cyprus is all these scammers are after; to line foreign coffers, not the RoC's! ~ Stalin? Animal Farm? 1984? Brave New World? They are the Dolly-Sheep-Clones 1a, 1b and 1c.
