Who wouldn’t say something like that after reading Greek fairytales… it’s just as well he died prior to 1974. :?

Not much of a recommendation to 'Valour' that the Greeks fought off the Italians, not when one remembers the joke about 'Comparisons':-

Question. "What is the difference between the Italian Army and a slice of toast?"

Answer. "You can make 'Soldiers' out of a slice of toast!"

Even old Benito Mussolini thought that was funny and incidentally, Winston Churchill was pissed when he made the original statement, he usually WAS.

Here's one sensible thing Sir W.C. said, whilst addressing Cyprus ...

"It is only natural that the Cypriot people who are of Greek descent, should regard their incorporation into their mother country as an ideal to be earnestly, devoutedly and fervently cherished."

Since Cyprus was under British control at that time Cyprus could not determine the "prettiness" of its situation. Thousands of Cypriots did, however, volunteer to fight for the British Empire and were shat on from a great height when Britain forced them to accept an undemocratic unworkable constitution.

The major reason GCs fought in WWII was for Enosis with Greece and NOT because of any love for the "British Empire" as you assert. Since they were later "shat on" as you say, this lends all the more force behind what EOKA later did!

They fought for Britain as opposed to Germany, I made no assertion as to WHY they did it, that's simply your interpretation Oracle, but then I'd expect no less from you. You may be interested to know that a significant number of Cypriots were conscripted into the British Forces because they lived in UK at the outbreak of war. Furthermore when I attended a Cypriot veterans reunion in Nicosia in 2003 with my father I met several former solders, I don't ever remember any of them mentioning Enosis as a reason for joining. One, at the age of 16, (he lied about his age) told me he joined because he was hungry and he knew he would be well fed in the British Army.

As for "shat on", that was a consequence of the Eoka campaign, the Zurich Agreement was hardly a victory.

(Jerry, why do you always have to sound so nasty?)

Yes, of course some Cypriots signed up for money. They were kept impoverished under colonial rule.
